After trying all sorts of other methods, I've decided to give the MEK/ABS method a try. Thusfar I've mixed a handful of ABS shavings with about a half cup of MEK.
a) about how long should it take to become a sludge?
b) how exactly do you apply the sludge?
Using ADS and Acetone, mine started to desolve to a slurry almost instantally. It was ready to use in about an hour.
Application was with a popsickle stick, sometimes with the tip of a rubber spacula and sometimes with my finger. Hope that helps.

For some reason, mine's not dissolving that quickly. Does Acetone work faster than MEK?
mek works faster the abs. you probably didnt use enough abs, it breaks down A LOT. Is it not dissolving or has it dissolved and it isn't thick enough? if it hasn't dissolved you can try to agitate it a little by stirring it gently. if it's just not thick enough you can add more shavings or keep the cap off and let the mek evaporate a bit

How did you make your abs? I used a hand planer, so the shavings were very thin. If your pieces are too large or thick it can take a long time to disolve.

Turns out the pipe i was using wasn't ABS. I found some old dash parts i cut off and shredded them. They melted in about a half hour. Finding REAL ABS here is a pain. luckly i have a few more spare dash parts and can probably salvage some more from a local junkyard.
I wouldn't use your finger with MEK. Studies show that MEK is absorbed through the skin and damages one's liver. Use a popsickle stick or spatula. Common rubber gloves won't survive exposure to MEK.
Acetone works fine. I just used tin snips to cut strips from ABS pipe and let it soak in acetone in a squeeze bottle for a couple of hours. It seems that more ABS is needed than acetone.
