Default Radar/laser detector remote mounts

What do you people have for remote radar/laser detector mounts? LEDs in the dash or perhaps an ambitious HUD modification?

I know it's strange to see me making a post that has nothing to do with audio.

I've toyed with the idea of a HUD mod. It seems all we would need to do is tap into the bus and know how to send the data to the HUD. What I don't know is, is there a library of symbols and whatnot that are stored in an Eprom and then called when needed. If that's the case, we may be out of luck unless we can hack into that Eprom.

What I'm hoping is the case, seeing the factory radio and Nav units display in the HUD, is that you only need to know how to send the data to the HUD for display. If that's the case...and it seems logical it is...then you'd only need a small mircoprossor based circuit to interface between the radar detector and and the HUD display. Having thought about it, I bet the HUD display is a graphical LCD based display.

We know the factory radio and nav units can show on the HUD so we can tap into the bus using the stock radio harness, but keeping both might be a problem unless we program our circuit to sense any activty on the radio side before displaying. We wouldn't want to have two sets of data trying to go over the bus at the same time unless there is a way to prioritize the display. Which there should be since when your gas gets low, you HUD shuts out any other display other than your speed and "Check gauges" warning.

I would love to try this.

In my C5 I had a Bel 975R mounted in the ash tray. When I got the C6 I put it in the drivers door pooka.

A few years back I remember seeing an illustrated DIY for how to take apart the C5 HUD and mount LED's that were connected to a detectors output. I think it was a V1 that they used, but I don't remember exactly, and can't currently find the thread. I'm pretty sure it was on this forum, maybe it was among the data lost when they 'redesigned' a few years ago
