In this price range you're mostly just looking for personal preference and features. Generally my preference when installing a unit in that range is Pioneer, though I'm sure you'll find folks that would say the same thing for Panasonic and Kenwood. Jensen is fairly low end these days so I would recommend against them.
Looks like you're seeing that correctly. The "radio" seems to be very iPod centric with the one-control-does-all approach with that not. They have the user manual here:

That's pretty much a deal breaker for me then. I'm still trying to figure out why they can't make a radio with 2 ***** and some buttons.
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this Kenwood. Looks like a little step up from the one I posted earlier. Still has the front Aux & USB ports. Actual buttons on the front. Just a little more $$ than those above ($170)
The pioneer does have them just no buttons! you use the remote
One one hand I'm thinking that's f'd up and it's turning me off to it. But then again, the radio in my DD has 6 preset buttons and I haven't touched them in forever. Just use the steering wheel remote. But this remote doesn't look to be steering wheel mounted. Maybe that's not common?
Hope this helps, I have the Kenwood 435 which is last years model, only difference is the small input jack in front.
I love my Kenwood, i have my sirius hookup, the remote is easy to use, my only complaint....when you buy it, they make you believe, you can hookup sirius/blue tooth/ipod cable/HD Radio/...which you can...but only one of them. There is only one input on the rear, I just recently found that out as I tried to install the Ipod cable to the rear myself (when i bought it, let best buy install it). Well I found out, all the accessories use the same input bus. So I stuck with my sirius. Yes you can hook up an ipod to the usb on the front, but not the newest generation like my iphone, need the rear cable.
If you have any questions about it, let me know.

Practically all aftermarket remotes are not steering wheel mounted, they're just flat rectangles. The iPod drives the car stereo market these days so you're seeing radios that are very iPod-centric like that Pioneer(check out Alpine's X00x offerings, they're all-ipod all the time). If you listen to radio a lot it sounds like you'd be far better off sticking to a more traditional radio design. Penta's advice about the older Eclipse on eBay is darned good too - the Eclipse would be a solid step-up in sound & build quality from any of the radios you've mentioned.
Never heard of Eclipse. They generally pretty decent?

They're just not as 'common' as Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, Sony, etc...

Eclipse is the brand name Fujitsu uses for car audio. They are a very well regarded brand and very conservative in adopting new technologies. That makes their models generally a year or more behind other makes but from the sound of what you're looking for, I don't think that's a problem.
The only issue I'm seeing with the Eclipse 3000 or 4000 is the lack of a USB input. That's something that I'd really like to have. Moreso than the aux input.
You know that could be, the sirius unit was kind of mounted in an awkward place where I didnt bother removing it and seeing, guess that is what I will be doing tomorrow afternoon. Thanks Pentavolvo. Any Ideas, where I might be able to check before tearing it all out tomorrow?
