I'm making a custom interface for my pc to take up the space below my screen and above the ac controls as pictured here:
here are my two designs that i have liked the most:
option A:
or
option B:
or
option C (vincec5):
option D
option E:
to help you visualize it better, the long slit is for the dvd-rom that will sit behind it. The holes with the crosshairs will be drilled out and little push button's will reside there and any of the text will be see through and backlit blue.
so, which one?

Option B, just add the C5 logo to the left of "corvette" and have it backlit.
i am very selective about how many times that damn logo gets put on my car :-) I added your suggestion (because it does add something to the design) but i'll need to be sit on that one for a while.

with the logo thing. It says Corvette enough times in the car and I guess I'm old enough to feel like throwing logos all over the place leans towards bling.
That said I'd lean towards A just because I prefer things that look balanced. I'd also skip the backlighting if you're going to put the Corvette lettering on there, just doing an engraving would look better to me.
Leaning towards A as well, makes the space look more balanced. Also will help when you are making changes while driving as there will be more space between each button.
If I were driving, I'd be able to reach out with my finger and feel the mass of buttons, then select one based on the layout. I think that might be a bit harder if they were stretched out in a line as in Option A.
The logo sets it off... I'd go with it no matter which way you go.
Any options for a USB port up front? Aux input jack?

thats a fantastic idea!!! i completely forgot about that

Not entirely my idea, but I'll take the credit for it.
It would be really easy to get a USB hub and take it apart to mod into the front panel. I'd go with a powered USB hub so I could run high-power devices or charge my iPod/iPhone. (Or plug in an additional portable HD.)
You can get a voltage regulator from Radio Shack or Fry's to drop the 12 VDC down to 5 VDC for the USB hub, too. Tap into the BATT or ACC up under the HU, depending on your preference.
Whatcha making the face from? I have a buddy with a nice laser that can make all kinds of custom acrylic stuff. He's pretty inexpensive as well. PM me if you're interested.
i was going to have the vinyl cut by a forum member and then the plexi/lexan cut by someone that has a laser cutter. i'll def take you up on your contact.
so, i've been talking with the laser cutter guy and i may switch the design a bit to have actual back lit buttons. I added two more designs; option e and d, what do you think?
the other option would be to take one of those last two designs and make it so that you wouldn't see anything when the unit was powered down, it would look like a flat piece of black plastic with a cd slot in it. when the unit powered up the buttons and corvette text would light up. sort of like this:
I could build the touch sensitive panel pretty easily using some qprox ic's and a few capacitors and what not.... i'm really leaning toward that last option but the other option would look more oem... thoughts?
or... i could do a hybrid. have actual tactile buttons but they'll be blank until the unit turns on.
sort of like this:
i hate having an overactive imagination!
