Has anyone ever installed a scanner in the dash of a '92 (or similiar)? I have a Radio Shack Pro-2066 DIN unit I want to install alond with a regular DIN CD receiver (eventually). Just how much room is there in that thar dash? Should the receiver go on the top or bottom? Whatcha think?
If it is a din size it will fit fine as our dash is a double din setup. Put the sterio on top. Easier for putting disks and tapes in and then the heat will not get trapped against the scanner but radiate up.(assuming the scanner doesn't generate alot of heat)
If you want to, you don't need any kit. You can file the original panel to fit them without one. A new panel is only about $30 from GM. This is what I'm gonna do when I add the DVD widescreen in the top section.
good question. i never got an answer when i posted about doing the same in my c5, so i just did this for the time being:
i'll probably wind up mounting it in a modified glove box.
the scanner, btw, is a uniden bc780xlt - the best damn scanner i have ever owned. the ICOM R2 and R3 are both close seconds though, especially since i got them while in canada (scanner enthusiasts will know why canadian scanners are better).
That's not too bad, but I want mine to be as stealthy as possible though.... the double din solution seems to be the best. Where did you put your antenna? I was thinking of a through-window mount (I have one on my Neon). It seems to be my only option other than putting one in under the fiberglass. Oh, well, a project for the winter months...
i tried a radio shack glass mount, but the damn thing fell off first time it was below freezing and i went over 100mph. now i'm looking into inside mount - check out grove-ent.com and strongsingals.net for options.

oh, and forget about the corvette buddy antenna mount. it is designed only for firestiks, and it would not hold up to triple digit speeds. right now, i'm leaning towards a custom internally mounted antenna (contained inside the car completely). might be the best idea anyway since having antennas visible on cars is just another way to advertise to crackhead thieves that you have something inside that can be stolen and pawned. :/
I couldn't agree more Tattoed!! I want to keep everything hidden and in the dash if possible. I was thinking of an antenna contained in the car... trouble is, I don't want to mount it horizontally (sp?) off plane. Not to mention height (which I have noticed most Vettes seem to have a lack of). Now, this could be a challange!
