Free fix :)
All you do is take out the unit, removed the main board from inside and add more solder to the 8 little black things. This was a super quick fix, especially considering I had the dash opened up anyway to install the stereo.
After hooking it all back up... IT WORKS!!! I LOVE free fixes that work. Kind of crazy that such a simple solution can fix such a big problem.
As far as the stereo I have the deck in and hooked up, the rca's and remote turn on run to the amp location, and the 0/1 gauge wire is run through the firewall. I just got the amp in the mail a few minutes ago and the sub box will be another week, it is just being painted then will be shipped out to me. I think I can get the door speakers in tonight.

The reason that they are in parallel is that they are low wattage resistors, so they cannot handle a lot of current. By using eight of them in parallel, they are able to drive the A/C display screen with enough current without exceeding their limits.
When the solder joints start to fail, it effectively increases the resistance in the circuit to the screen, dropping the available current and overall voltage. The screen starts to dim until it goes completely blank.
You are right about it being a simple fix... I was able to do mine easily enough. I had an issue with keeping the resistors in place while re-soldering them in place, so I used a pencil eraser to press down on them while heating them up. Dab a little resin and solder into place, and it's all good.
