Default AVIC D3 Illumination questions

I have an AVIC D3 and have a couple of things that arent working correctly.

1) I have single zone climate control. I went to the C5 sticky at the top of the page and the plug shown for where to tap the illumination is not present. I found a similar tan colored wire but that didnt seem to work when I checked it. Any thoughts on how to wire the illumination if you have single zone climate control and does anyone know exactly what wire it is?

2) I hooked my vehicle speed sensor wire up to the green wire with the white stripe in the stock radio harness, went for a drive and got nothing from the speed pulse indicator on the D3. I don't know why this is. I finally found the right wire in this post.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1948171

3) also for the reverse signal I read in passing that there is a place you can tap the wire going back to the reverse lights from the passenger footwell. Does anyone know exactly what wire this is.

I'm wondering if I just have to give it a little drive time. It says in the manual to do this but I wanted to see if anyone else had any of the same problems.

Thanks,

I tapped the reverse wire back at the back-up lights. It's not the closest thing to the HU, but it was quick and easy.

holy crap. I didnt realize you had to go through all that just to get the illumination to work.

Do you have single zone hvac or dual zone?

Any resolution on the illumination wire for single zone HVAC? I'm currently in the same situation.

2.) I posted a positive result for the green with white from the Bose adapter. Since found it wasn't giving pulses. Just changed the post I made on that, sorry. Just go to the gauge cluster and tap into green with white stripe at position #7. I did an install this morning and it takes a half hour or so to get the VSS from the cluster. Look in vetteessentials.com for the instructions for gauge bezel install and it has clear directions to get the gauge cluster out (You just need to pull it forward enough to get the connector out of it, tap into #7 and put it back.)

I'll pause here for a second to thank vetteessentials .com, forum vendor for the great help along the way on all the installs!

3.) For the reverse wire. Just run the purple wire back to the reverse lights. At the same time place the GPS antenna on top of the 3rd brake light. There is enough room to put the magnetic base and the GPS on top of that with a little glue to be sure it stays there. Run the GPS wire and the reverse wire at the same time toward the front. Not difficult. Just pull the plate and then then pull the panel the license plate goes on for good access back there. Need to drill a small hole in the rear to get the wires through. Lucky we have the plastic cars that GPS type antenna sees through no problem so they can be out of site.

As always, many ways to skin a cat and this is just one!

I have dual zone, but I believe that doesn't matter as the dimmer is done the same way in either case (PWM).

Like I said, the manuals really don't cover this problem or feature.

I came up with a "fix" after I hung a scope on the line and saw what was going on.

What threw me off was this big honking fuse on the illumination line going to the AVIC.

I knew I nailed it though when the screen reversed to a black background on the lowest dimmer setting after I added the inverter.

If you can't build one, PM me and I can duplicate for ya.

A lot of guys just connect the illumination wire or don't even bother but I want it to work like it is supposed to.

I guess I am weird that way.

When I connected the illumination wire the this cream colored wire, I still couldnt get it to work. This is the current problem I'm struggling with. Any thoughts on why this wouldnt be working?

Not for the single zone HVAC, because the cream colored wire in the picture does not exist. The plug for the HVAC is different. There is a similar colored wire on the plug that is there (its tan), but this may or may not be for illumination. If so, it may require the same modification you listed above. Point is we have no idea which wire to even start out with.

Got a scope?

Connect it to this line and vary the dimmer and watch the pulse stream.

If it (the pulse ) stretches as you vary the dimmer, you got it.

If you hook it up to the AVIC, the dim feature will be reversed.

That is, you will see a subtle change in intensity when the dimmer is lowered, but the AVIC screen will go brighter (not by much but noticable).

The switching to black background will not work though.

A very simple circuit to duplicate to correct this, but if you need one fabbed, PM me.

Three resistors and an NPN transistor (RTL logic).

You can also remove this wire from the connector and see if the dimmer function on the HVAC readout works.

Then you know you got the right wire.

Just remember to put it back in the right place!
