Default Sudden dramatic volume change

My 96 CE with Bose has started doing something very annoying. For no apparent reason, the volume will jump to a level so loud that it is startling. After about 3 secs it will return to its previous level. I don't use the radio much (prefer the sweet sound of horsepower), but do play it at times; can't use it though if this continues. Thoughts??

Do you use the speed-sensitive-volume? If so, I've heard that various electrical gremlins can cause a faulty speed to be sent to the head unit, causing it to bump up the volume. See if it quits when you set the SSV to off.
