Can I connect an Ipod directly to an after market amp with RCA plugs? will it work? I'm currently installing speakers on my 68 Firebird and don't want to install a head unit,
It'll work, but the more you turn up the headphone amp on the iPod the more noise you'll introduce. If you got an iPod cable that connected to the dock and output it's pre-amp signal you could use something like this:
scott i know u love that preamp lol, but honestly if hes not aiming for crazy SQ i feel he could get away without it. Last summer when I pulled the alpine headunit from my boat to put in one of the cars i was selling, i did the ipod straight to the amp with the same stuff I have linked and I had to up the gain a bit on the amp to get full volume but honestly SQ vs with the headunit was the same
i doubt that preamp will give him that much of an improvement in sq, just more adjustments and in all honesty.. it looks cleaner then that volume **** :-)

agreed, being a 68 firebird maybe he is leaving the OEM deck in dash and hiding the ****
ha.. i only read half of the op's post. well, he has options now. :-) hell... just going from the headphone out to the amp may be good enough for him then.
Thanks everyone for the help. I'm going with the RCA controller and docking cable for now and see how that works. Last night I plugged the ipod directly to the powered sub, the car whole car was rattling from the bass. I'm picking up an amp and 6X9 speakers this weekend, once eveything is installed I'll post my results.

Make sure the amp you choose has a crossover and sub/pre out to pass the signal to the powered sub. Set the crossover to Low Pass (LP) at 80Hz to start with and adjust up or down as your ear dictates. Enjoy!
