Default Help me build a sub box for my c3

Well I have two brand new 10" subs (Dual brand) that I got for free with purchase of an amp and I figured i'd put one of them in. I want to build a box in the cargo area in my c3 (where the jack, etc sits). I am going to be keeping my battery in the rear compartment, but I wanted to make a box that would fit into the left side of that compartment. I've seen some people with these type boxes but they either have smaller subs or something else. I want this box to be flush with the floor of the cargo area. I am thinking of either a seeled box or a vented box, and I know that you need to have about 1 square foot of space for a 10" sub. After measuring I noticed that it is not possible to have a 12x12x12 box fit into that space as it is not perfectly proportionate so I am going to need to change up the dimensions a little bit. So post up your boxes that you have made and suggestions for me. I don't need it really loud, just some added junk for my trunk.

I'm not looking for perfect sound as the sub was free. I just want a little more bass. I have recently finished putting in my dynamat into the entire trunk, so I shouldn't have many rattles.

Thanks in advanced

Thats what I did. I used a 8". I don't think you are going to get 1 cf and staying flush with the floor. My box was made out of 1/2 mdf and I was able to get about .75 cf. Worked out real good. I can even close the original door if I want to cover the speaker.

If I was you I would build the box where it came just above the floor an inch or two. Just enough to get your 1 cf and a big enough for the sub hole.
Or go to an 8" sub.

Don't worry about the box being 12x12x12. So long as the overall dimensions are 1728 cubic inches, you have 1 cubic foot of space. (12x12x12 = 1728. 12x24x6 = 1728. 10x10x17.28 = 1728. )

I don't know the specifications of the Dual drivers, so I can't comment on how much space they need. I do know that for a given driver in a sealed cabinet, you can 'fudge' the numbers a little and still be okay. Sealed boxes are a bit more forgiving than ported boxes.

When you say that you need a cubic foot, is that for both subs? (I have a 12" driver that only requires 0.88 cubic feet... but your mileage may vary.) Do you happen to have the specifications of the drivers handy?

If you need to make a box that is smaller, use pillow stuffing from Wal-Mart and stuff the box with it. It makes the subs 'think' that they are in a bigger box. You can make the box slightly smaller and stuff it with poly fill (pillow stuffing) and get the same results as a larger box with no stuffing.

If you can give me the dimensions of the opening in your C3, I can probably come up with a few ideas that will work. Also, if you can direct me to the speaker specifications or post them here, that would be great.

Hey Mark, i'll try to get the details of the subs.

I have two subs, but I don't think I have enough space to put both in that compartment as I still want to keep my battery behind the drivers side of the compartment. I was thinking about using one sub.

Thing is, in the rear compartment in my c3 it may be too tight to fit a 10 inch sub in there. I figured i'd try it since I got two subs sitting in boxes. I'll get the dimensions of the space.

Alright here are a few of the specs - there was no manual for the sub in the box.

I made a drawing for the rear compartment dimensions.

I'll host it and post it

the manual calls for .75 for the 10" Dual. thats about what I got for my 8W7 in the jack compartment or a little less. the problem is going to be getting the 10" diameter to fit. my 8" barely fit.

I checked out the *.pdf file that SublimeZ posted. I wish Dual gave the TS parameters of the sub... but oh well. (TS parameters are the actual electrical/mechanical performance specs for the sub, used to design a proper sub box.)

From what I can see in the *.pdf file, you can have a sub box that is anywhere from 0.35 to 0.75 cubic feet. The bigger the box, the lower the frequency response... go too small and the bass will have a 'peak' at a certain frequency... so we'll try and avoid that.

If you can take some pictures of the area you want to put the sub, and post the dimensions of that space, we can get your box designed.
