Got a couple of questions regarding my audio system. Let me first say that I have a little build/audio experience, but just a little. Also, I'm not trying to build a competition system, just want the music to be good quality at a decent volume.
The situation currently is that I was fairly happy with the stock Bose system in my 2001 coupe, but wanted mp3/ipod capability. So I put in a JVC HD headunit (new model), and I've seen a noticeable decline in audio quality, especially bass response. I've messed with the eq settings and it just doesn't sound good with radio or CD. So...I've decided to install a sub/amp to help.
I just ordered an alpine 10" sub (swr-1042d) dual voice coil 500w rms. My questions are these - what is a recommended amp? i talked with a guy who said that the alpine m500 amp would be fine even though it is only rated to 300w rms. Also, where's a good place to mount the amp? Can I place against the rear of the trunk (vertically)? If so, does anybody know the proper screw depth so I don't go through the body? Finally, it seems like people recommend replacing the front speakers - what is a good budget setup for that if i wanted to do that later?
He is correct, chance are your 8" drivers in the doors are no longer working. The JVC headunit is probably hooked up to the 3.5" door speakers and the 5.5" rear speakers.
The Alpine amp and sub will give you your bass back (and then some). If I was in your shoes, I would also replace the front speakers with some 6.5" seperates. Best wishes
The door subs are currently working, though the long story is that when i got the vette back from the installer they weren't. i took it back immediately and told them something was terribly wrong - they installed the adapter fix, and it worked (sort of). It is not that i'm getting no bass at all, just that the sound is bass weak, and just sounds muffled and poor in general. Regarding my amp question, the m500 is rated at 500w rms at 2 ohms, but only 300w rms at 4 ohms which is what i think that dual voice coil sub runs on. So will it be underpowered with the m500? thanks.

300 watts rms into a sub rated at 500 watts max will be plenty
