Default Best Head Unit

Looking to take the system plunge.

What is the best looking / most OEM looking head unit? Pics please...

Also my plan is Focal or Alpine high-end 5 1/4 components in front only with a 10" sub. I like the mids out of 5 1/4 better than 6 1/2 and figure with the small cabin and a nice musical sub I should have nice, full sound. Thoughts / comments?

Thanks.

Why would you want 5.25 over 6.5? Unless you dislike having midbass?

in any case you can use a rockford 360.2 unit to ge all the neat aftermarket controls, while keeping your stock head unit. oem-look isn't in trend with head units...

C6. Either or - again nice, OEM / non-bling appearance (no need for dvd). While I'd prefer not to endlessly spend, I can afford not to skimp to get it right.

Not dead set on 5.25s... just have had good success with DIY bookshelf projects with 5.25s and a sub.

bookshelf and car are completely different worlds for sure. You can hear decent midbass out of 5.25s sitting on your shelf. Especially with cute little ported enclosures. In a car, even most 6.5s are questionable, and are the smallest I'd use (though fairly optimal in a 2 way setup with most tweeters.)

If you're looking for an awesome single din HU, the Clarion DRZ-9255 is hard to beat for sq and simplicity. No bling, very clean and easy to operate.
I just happen to have one for sale if you're interested along with a good bit of other system components.

C6 has a double DIN opening, so you will want to stay with that vs. a single DIN. You can tap into the factory head unit if you want to run an amp and speakers, so you don't HAVE to replace it if you don't want to.

The Komoman has done some testing and found that the stock HU is clean and flat on the response. So if you like the looks and functionality, you don't need to replace it. Look in the C6 FAQ at the top of the audio page for more info.

Kale is absolutely right. I wouldn't go with anything less than a 6.5" in a Vette. You could go with something bigger if you wanted to... the doors could hold a larger driver but you will have some resonance (vibration) if you don't reinforce the door properly.

Focal is a good choice... but be sure to buy from a reputable dealer. There are a lot of fakes out there that LOOK a lot like Focals... but aren't.

I have the Pioneer 720PRS components and think they sound great. No complaints at all.

If you wanted to, you could build your own components. Spkrboy built a custom set of components for The Komoman's C6 and I hear they sound great! Custom crossover and all of that. Do a search and you can find the multiple threads where he explains how/why he did certain things. Mind boggling, to say the least.

If it were me, I would spend the money on a decent amp and a set of front components. get it dialed in and enjoy... and if you want the additional features of an aftermarket HU, then get one after the speakers and amp are dialed in properly.

Good luck.
