Default Audio newby. Need advice

I have a 97 C5 coupe with an all stock stereo system and 12 disc changer. That being said I would like to upgrade the system for a better listening experience. I don't want anything that will vibrate the glass in the neighbors windows but I would like a noticeable improvement over what I have. Can this be done without upgrading the whole system head unit, speakers, ect.. I don't mind spending some money but I'm **** about things working correctly and looking good. I was looking at replacing the head unit with a Kenwood 8120 but then have read posts stating the bluetooth is finickey and the voice quality to the person you're talking to is poor. If I spend money on a new head unit and it has navigation and bluetooth capabilities I want them to work correctly. If I can just upgrade the existing speaker system and get a better sound I can always buy a Garmin and have Navigation and use the bluetooth through it. Most important to me is good sound. I don't need all the bells and whistles but I'm open to getting them and spending more if it all works! Any help would be appreciated.

If "good sound" is the first priority, junk the stock speakers.

From there on you can determine how much you want to spend driving them.

IMHO you end up yanking everthing.
