I'm having a buddy of mine make some custom sub boxes for an 06 Z06 out of fiberglass that we are going to wedge into the back corner. We were working on them this week when friend of his came over and was watching and then asked, "where are you going to port these" I told him we weren't it's a sealed enclosure. He then proceded to tell me they won't work like that, it has to be ported. I recall reading that ported boxed had to be designed very carefully and the sealed boxes were more tolerant of odd shapes as long as they were stiff and sealed.
Now, I started doubting this because I'm not an expert on this subject. Can someone chime in that knows and set me straight on the basics of sub box construction?
Ported and sealed boxes will be different in dimension, and sound characteristics.
Sealed boxes will have tighter bass, but less volume compared to ported ones.
Ported on the other end, will give more volume(bass) but also requires more volume(cubic inches) and is much more trickier to build.
Like you said, sealed boxes are easier to build.
Good luck!
