I've been through the FAQ's over the weekend (tons of reading...thanks to all that helped make them!), and just want to make sure my checklist is complete for everything I need to assemble before upgrading my system.
First off, I have a 2006 with BOSE, no OnStar. I'm replacing the entire system and will not be using the BOSE at all, or any parts of it. I will be putting in probably a Kenwood DNX7 series HU and Polk speakers in the doors and retain the existing speakers in the rear.
- Dash Kit Metra 95-3304
- Peripheral GMAH24
- Peripheral GMAHCM
- Metra 40-GM10 (Ant. Adapter)
- PAC ADD-GM24 wiring adapter
- Amp (Looking at an Alpine 4-ch)
- Polk db6500 or equivalent
- Speaker mounts
- Crossovers
- Kenwood HU
- New grommets for door
- Wiring/connectors for amp/speakers
I'm not sweating the small stuff I can run down to RS and get...but don't want to forget/miss anything I have to order. Looking to do this over a weekend so I can take my time.
So my question is have I missed anything that I absolutely have to have?
Missed the GMCO completely reading the FAQ's! Now I see it...duh, thanks. No harness either...good, wasn't sure about it.
Grommets...can't think of what they're called, p/n 10351052 from GM to hold the door panel on? I understand they get broken easily during panel removal or am I mistaken?
Ok...revised list (in case someone does a search later on and finds this thread):
- Dash Kit Metra 95-3304
- Peripheral GMCO
- Metra 40-GM10 (Ant. Adapter)
- Speaker mounts for doors (going to go the lexan route as I'm experienced with lexan)
- Door pins from GM, p/n 10351052 (I know I'll break some!! )
Planned stereo equipment:
- Kenwood DNX7140
- Alpine PDX4.100 amp
- Polk db6501 Component (for doors, includes crossovers)
- Wiring/connectors for amp/speakers
Running new speaker wire to all speakers so BOSE can be put back into place if I decide to sell the car and keep the sound system.
take a look at elemental designs e3.65i speakers should be similar price to the polks and they are great speakers sound alot better and more midbass IMO
Interesting...I see they have another one e9.65i's that are about $90 more that are reviewed well on their site. Will those fit (tweeter requires more depth) the Vette do you know? I'm not against spending a little more if it's money well spent and if I can then get away without a sub.
NVM, I found a thread where you discussed them and apparently they'll fit the door. You seem to like the elemental equipment and their amp price (Nine.4) is better than the Alpine unit I was looking at...seems to be worth a try for me.
there speakers will diffently fit. i ahve 9.65s in my daily driver and the midbass output is great. regardless of what speakers you get i would consider some form of sound deadner in ur doors it will help alot. the nine4 is a solid amp and underrated real world output is in the area of 80watts rms x4 @4ohm.
I'm definitely going to put the deadener in the doors while I have them open...saw that in the FAQ. I'll give the Elemental speakers and amp a try...I'm not an audiophile by a long ways but I do know I don't like the sound of my BOSE! Although their rear speakers will work just fine according to what I've read.
Thanks again for your help! Off to place some orders.
They that bad huh? lol...figures. Well, I think then for now I'll just unplug them...that way I can use the Nine.4 to drive a sub later on.
Thanks again! Already ordered the generic stuff...will be ordering the speakers and amp here in a bit...trying to settle on a HU...decisions decisions!
Yeah, I don't really have a lot of options. I don't want the amp to take up any space except in the cubby and don't want to put it behind the passenger seat. So...the Alpine should do nicely and I can still use it to drive a sub later on since I'm not going to use the rear speakers or I can fit another Alpine in the cubby as well.
since you are amping the doors and using adapter plates, go get some 3M Strip Caulk from O'Reillys (you will have to ask for it and they likely wont know what it is...look for it on their website)...it is the best kept secret in car audio in my opinion. put a layer down as you seal the speakers and the plates to the doors and they will never rattle and it will create a better air tight seal
Ok...finances are a bit slow, so I'm going to do this in phases if I can. Already bought the face plate and GMCO as well as ant. adapter and have those. Going to get speakers this week...my question can I bypass the BOSE system and drive the speakers with the factory HU? I don't blast the stereo so not looking for top end sound...just normal driving with the radio on.
