Alarm Code When Removing Bose?

I have a 1996 C4 with a Bose Gold CD/Cass/Radio. All stock. I have been advised that if you remove the unit from the car without "knowing the security code" something bad will happen! Is this true? I see nothing in the owner's manual or my Haynes manual about such a precaution. If it is true, what is this code, where do I find out what my code is, and how do I manage removal and reinstallation?

Even if you forget the code, you can go to the dealer to get the radio enabled again. No big deal.

I had no problems with my 91. Replaced head unit and speakers with a Clarion unit for about $420
