What would the realistic time it should take to get a factory radio unlocked at a dealer, I just installed a factory navigation unit in my 08 and I have checked with 2 dealers in my area both gave me a estimate of 2 to 4 hrs labor at $95.00 per hr. is this about right for the amount of time.
Thanks

Um, about 10 minutes including time to remember where he left his lighter. You hook the Tech II programmer to the ODB port, wade through the menus and save it. Do not pay a dealer 3 hours worth of labor for their idiot technicians to figure it out.
What type of business would have this tool for doing the job, I just checked with the 3rd Chevy dealer in my area and was told it would be at least a 2 hr job at a cost of $185.00 it looks like GM is going down and the dealers are trying to pick up the slack.
Some Corvette specialty shops might have them, as may some independent service shops. The problem you may be running into is that the people on the phone you're talking have ZERO idea what you're talking about. Odds are you'll be on the hook for a minimum of 1 hour of shop labor, but that should be absolutely it. Ask in the regional section for the top Vette service dealer in your area and odds are you'll find what you need.
Well I found a automotive shop that has the Tech 2 and he can do it going to charge $125.00 . I have a question for you 2kvert what kind of code will he be looking for if I knew I could maybe help him with the time it takes,
Thanks for all that replied.
David
Hey David, as a GM dealer technician I am really surprised that the dealers with whom you checked wanted to charge you more than the minimum diagnosis rate (1 hr. which would be around $89.00 at my shop). Like the man above with the Tech 2 said, it's really about a 5 minute procedure providing that you have a Tech 2, for this radio you don't even need to run the Tech 2 through SPS programming that is on the dealer's computer, it's all done right there, in the car. Don't be alarmed if the time on the radio is not set, the satellites will do that for you.
Good luck and don't pay over a hundred dollars for this, Ray in OKC.
Well after a week of waiting I finally got the navigation unit unlocked at 1 of the newer Chevy dealer's in town, I was a little shocked at the $143.00 it cost for the 45 min. I spent in the waiting room not sure how long it took the tech, but at least it's working.
i have the same dilemma put a nav in my 08. I know someone who has a tech 2, but they haven't updated the software in years, would this still work on a newer car ? or would he need the software updated before trying it ? I don't want to screw up anything. I don't mind going to the dealer, but the one whom I trust the most is an hour and a half away and I don't have time to get out there anytime soon. having no radio sucks!
