I installed my tweeters on Saturday and yes, that top screw is a beeotch! I took a screwdriver and forced the plastic panel up enough where I could get a nut driver on the screw. I was going to make a bracket to point the tweeters towards the front but I ended up just mounting them with velcro high up on the b pillar. Sounds better than before and worth the $20 IMHO.
I did this upgrade this weekend and i love it. To me it sounds much better. I followed Turbo5's great instructions except i got into my junk box and found some small plastic 45 degree brackets. I super glued the speakers to the brackets and then the brackets to the speaker grill w/ them angled toward the front. I also have the hardtop/z06 partition that i built installed and this also greatly enhances the sound. Thanks Turbo5.
I have these in my 1996 is it helps out quite a bit (especially since the passengers legs block the tweeters). I installed mine is parallel with the midrange in the front (tried it across the tweeter but it sounded really poor). It monuted right to the EXISTING screw on the top of the A-pillar....and it looks compleatly like a factory install. Just back out the screw...thread it into the back cover or the tweeter....and tighten....the screw now holds the a pillar and the tweeter!!!!
Picked up a pair and installed them yesterday. Now the radio and CD's sound pleasantly adequate as compared to mediocre. Never really played the radio much because it just wasn't that great to listen to. I think this tweak with have me using and enjoying the stock unit much more.
Z06'ers should take care since their speaker grilles do not "pop out"... the entire panel must be removed in order to access the speaker.
I mounted my tweeters with velcro facing forward on the rear panel just below the glass. Very easy to extend the tweeters to this position with the amount of wire that they are supplied with.
Significant improvement in clarity and imaging. Thanks for a most worthwhile (and cost effective) tip.
Re: Nice Stereo upgrade for only $19.95 (dba4life)
The Radio Shack I went to had stock # 40-1391 which are about .5" smaller in diameter. They have a higher sensitivity rating 92 to 87, but the frequency ranger is 5k-20k vs. 5k-30k. I kinda like the smaller ones as they would even be more invisible.
I just got done installing these RadioShack speakers (40-1217) and instead of mounting them outside the grill I installed them using the rear side screw that holds the regular speaker. The tweeters will still fit under the original grills and they are completely hidden. The only thing I had to modify was to replace the normal hex head screws, on the rear side mount only, with small diameter 1" bolts and added a small hex nut, which acts like a washer, between the existing speaker and the new speaker mounting plate. I know it doesn't give any better directionality but I like the stock look.
I would say it has improved the highs quite a bit...they seem to surround you more...maybe not as good as mounting them to point forward but for a clean look well worth it!

Oops al I just sent you a IM before seeing this. Do you have any pictures? and how exactly did you wire these?

Did the same and it looks stock but sounds much better. Thanks for all the great tips!
One tip of mine: For a secure connection without soldering, I removed the little white clip that's part of the speaker connection, pushed the new wires for the tweeter down in there and then reinserted the white clip. Worked perfectly.
I just caught up with the stereo upgrade discussion
I thought it was just me...I will be picking up the Radio shack $20 deal Sunday :D
Is the installation on the speaker the best location or the most convenient and would another location be as important to installation as the directional adjustment of the tweeters?
Thanks for a Great tip! :seeya
I just installed mine in my '86. I placed them at the base of the rollover (?) bar between the slotted interior light and the seatbelt attachment. I ran the wire beneath the side molding to the rear speakers. The wiring is hid, the speaker itself is barely noticeable, and the sound improvement is great.

How exactly did you wire to the rear speaker? I am very interested in doing this to my '92 but when it comes to do anything with wiring i am a total idiot.

Yesterday I took off the speaker and found the clip, I didnt have much time so I screwed the speaker back in thinking the clip would be the way to go. Any tips in removing the clip? I already broke the push-in pin so trying to avoid a repeat. Any help would be appreciated.

To remove the main clip assembly, I just pushed a flathead screwdriver against the retaining clip and it slides right out. To remove the little white clip, pull it with your thumbnail while pushing down on the nub that holds it in with a screwdriver. Hope this helps!
Re: Nice Stereo upgrade for only $19.95 (Aries '75)
Aries '75 - I'm not sure if your speakers are the same as mine, but I think they are. I used double stick foam tape and mounted the speaker near the bottom of the rollover bar, just ahead of the slotted rear cargo lights. I ran the wire directly underneath the side molding and towards the back. Once you remove the existing speaker you can get enough slack in the carpet to pull it out from under the side molding (so you don't even have to cut the carpet to get the wire through it. Crimp (or solder) small spade terminals on the new speaker wire ends. After the speaker grill and speaker are removed, you can push the spade ends into the existing speaker wire plug on the back of the speaker. Once you've done that (and before you reinstall the speaker and grill, test the new speaker. If you can hear it, you have the polarity correct, if you can't hear it, reverse the wires. After you're satisfied it works, replace the speaker, grill, and enjoy. Hope this helps.
