Default Install questions from a newbie

Hey all,
Well the Mustang got old and I bought my first Vette. As most of you probably found out after 2 days the stock stereo leaves a lot to be desired. I don't mind the speakers so much but the non MP3 head unit bothers the hell out of me.

i've read the faq thread and I understand I need the bose peripheral adapter. what I'm still lost on is what I actually need. i've tried google and still don't have definite answer or found any links to specifically what I need.

I found this and is what i'm going to need to keep the stock bose speakers and have the stock subs work?
http://www.pac-audio.com/productDeta...&CategoryID=28

Besides this what will I need? just the vehicle specific harness and block of plate for the empty din spot?

If there's something else needed for this install please let me know and throw me a link. And if the link I posted is not for the correct adapter to use a new head unit with the stock speakers please let me know and link me to what I will need.

I've been reasearching this all night so any help would be great.

Thanks guys

for an aftermarket head unit in a GM vehicle you're also going to need an adapter for the antenna (for some reason GM uses a different style)

as for the bose device I can't say, I ripped everything out and put in amps and speakers, never did just a head unit.

Welcome to the forum

The link you have is for the AOEM-Vet1, that's what you'd use to add an amp to the stock HU. To keep the stock amps but change the HU you need to get the ROEM-Vet1

I may be mistaken, but I don't think the adapter provides you with a switched wire to trigger the new HU since there isn't one going to the stock radio (it uses the class 2 data wire and the constant). If you want to keep RAP (radio stays on until you open a door) you'll need something like this (there are cheaper ones, but this was the only one I could get to work in my '01). If you don't mind losing RAP with the new HU, there is a 3-wire pigtail in the upper left corner of the compartment under the passenger side floor board (above the fuse box). Black is ground, orange is constant (fused), yellow is switched (also fused).

The stock speakers are generally considered the weak link in these cars. If you replaced the 3.5" twiddlers in the doors with something like the BA S35's it would be a good improvement.

Default more info...

You might want to consider a fancy mounting adapter. I had the blue illuminated one and it looked pretty cool.

Depending on which HU and mount you get, you may have to slightly modify the bracket behind the radio. Some cut it out with a sawzall, I just bent mine a bit with channel-locks so the new radio would fit.

If you want to add XM/SIRIUS, bluetooth, or anything else with a box external to the actual HU, there's plenty of room to stash everything next to the HVAC fan motor. It's above the passengers feet, kinda behind/under the glove box. Pull out the plastic push pins that hold the plastic piece there (the one with the light mounted on it) and it will fall down. Just zip-tie your components to the frame so they don't sit on the plastic.

If you were planning on keeping an iPod in the center armrest, you may want to consider using the glove box instead. It gets a bit warm in the center storage, especially in 6-speeds. Some iPods have prematurely expired that way.

If you need them for any reason, you can find the C5 radio plug pinouts here, and the actual radio schematics here

Any questions about where to find specific wires should be answered in the C5 FAQ thread.
