The 12 disc changer jammed a couple of years ago--a local audio repair shop charged me about $150 to repair the broken part in the changer. It has jammed again. If I could find a used one at a reasonable price, it might more sense than paying another $150 to get it repaired again. Any suggestions (other than eBay) where I might find one? Pioneer was the original maker for GM; does anyone know if any current production Pioneer CD changer is compatible with it?
A few years ago I was looking into getting the CD changer in my 98 vette. Now happy I didn't go that route. I was introduced to the IPod. I didn't know anything about that thing or how it even worked. Had to ask around about it and finally went for it. I'm all smiles now and never looked back at the CD changer. It sounds great and right now I have about 450 CDs on it with room for plenty more if I want to put more on it. I have all that music at my finger tips and can pick and choose whatever CD I want and not limited to just 12 CDs. No more carrying around a bunch of CDs for me.
That may be something you might want to check out.
I presume that there is some kit that converts from the CD changer socket to the USB connection on an MP3 player? (I have nothing against the iPod, but there are a variety of MP3 players out there besides it.) Does the factory stereo successfully control your iPod? Or do you need a separate control? The last I want why driving fast is one more control to fiddle with for the stereo.
There are a number of non-stock CD changers that will work with the stock C5 head unit. One is the Rockford Fosgate RFX-8601, 6 disc changer, which can often be found on EBAY for $50 to $100. It needs a simple cable rewire to connect to the stock GM CD Changer harness. That is what I have for my 01 C5. There are also some Clarion and Panasonic built 6 disc CD changers that will work, that were stock in some other GM models (I dont have the GM part #s handy, but could provide if you are interested). These changers can also be found on EBAY for a reasonable price.
A Rockford Fosgate RFX-8601 (6 disc) will work with the GM stock head unit. The Rockford connector needs to be removed, and the wires connected to the stock wire harness located in the rear compartment. The connections are as follows :
If you strip open the Rockford cable, you will find the following inside
green wire
blue wire
yellow wire
a black cable, which when stripped has inside :
black wire
white wire
red wire
foil shield and bare strands
This is how you conect to the existing GM 10 pin , flat connector that used to plug into the stock CD changer :
GM connector Rockford CD wires Function
Pin 1 brown/white black Line level audio left
Pin 2 dark green/white white Line level return
Pin 3 black/white red Line level audio right
Pin 4 bare wire bare shield strands shield
Pin 5 orange green +12V
Pin 6 not used
Pin 7 black ? blue Power ground
Pin 8 not used
Pin 9 not used
Pin 10 dark green yellow digital communication control bus
Note : This only works for the Rockford Fosgate RFX-8601 6 disc changer. They also have a newer 8 disc changer, but I don't think it will work. Also, this changer is actually made by Panasonic, but the seemingly identical Panasonic labeled versions will not work. There is another version of this changer that will also work, it has a GM part number (don't know it), and was used as the stock CD changer in the Cadilac Seville STS/SLS (around model year 2000), located in the front seat center armrest/console. It may have also been used in other GM models, but I don't know which. Some company actually makes a plug and play adapter cable between the GM 10 pin and Rockford round "DIN" connector, but I don't know the manufacturer or model #.
