9140 installed - need help with loading custom background please!
I just got around to installing the 9140 in my ZO6 this past weekend.
I tried to install a jpg background from another site last night, following the instructions in the 9140 manual. I had the picture stored in SanDisk 4GB drive, and I plugged it into the separate USB cable in my glovebox (the IPOD USB cable is connected inside my dash). When I entered the tools/display/background section, the "change" button was greyed out. In the USB source, my picture is listed in the file structure, but it doesn't appear until I touch the box in the upper left hand corner which says something like "no picture". Once I touch that box the jpg appears on the 9140's screen.
I'm sure I'm just missing a simple step. I can get the picture to appear on the screen in the USB source, but it's not coming up on the tools/display/background area so I can upload it into memory.
Any help that those of you who have more experience can provide would be greatly appreciated! I'll post pictures once I get a get a good looking background installed.
Thanks for the input. I'm kind of thinking it may be the fact that the IPOD USB cable is connected as well, but that just doesn't make much sense. You would think that Kenwood would design the HU knowing that the IPOD connection would always be connected and buried in the dash, and that the 2nd USB would be used for a portable drive of some sort. In fact, that's one of the reasons I went with the 9140 - because I wouldn't have to keep unhooking my IPOD cable when I wanted to load data into the HU.
As far as the other link goes, that appears to be for the startup screen and not the background. The startup screen is what I'm going to tackle next once I get a background image loaded.
Put the unit into "Standby" before trying to load an image. Also, make sure the image is in the root directory of the USB drive. My guess is you were not in standby mode. While you should be able to load an image while the unit is in another source my 2 units have been hit or miss for loading images in anything other than Standby mode.
I was on the phone with Kenwood support today and mentioned this suspend necesity(sp). They said it was going to be fixed in a future firmware update. So my guess is this suspend step isn't in the manual because its a bug in their unit
Thanks for everyones help. The standby mode was the ticket. Too bad Kenwood doesn't include this minor detail in their manual.
As promised, here's a couple of quick pictures I took
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
Nice! Did you make that or is that one of Carmen's? I asked Carmen to make me one with an AO Corvette to use as my initial splash screen.
Changing the background is in the manual along with having to put the HU in standby mode in order to change it. The Kenwood manual is not very easy to follow though I'll admit. Did you change the background or was it the initial splash screen? The splash screen is not in the manual because Kenwood does not really want the user changing that. It is there for OEM use only but with the net it slipped out like most things do.
EDIT: You are correct. I went back and checked the manaul and no where does it say that you have to be in "Standby" mode in order to load an image. It only says you cannot have the USB device selected. Hmmm...I guess I got that from trial and error. I do remember it being a royal PITA to figure out initially when I installed the 5120.
It's one of Carmine's. I figured I'd get the easier of the images loaded (the background) before I attacked the splash screen mod as detailed by VBLUE42 on the Kenwood site. The splash screen is next.
I know the instructions are in the manual for the background change, and that's what I tried to follow last night when I attempted to install Carmine's photo. I must have missed the part about the HU needing to be in standby :o .
I hope Carmine is able to create an image for you with an AO C6. He really does great work.

Changing the splash screen is pretty easy. I just did it tonight to test it. I also loaded the red light camera POI into the NAV's. This is pretty cool and tells you when your approaching a red light camera. Not that I'd ever blow a red light but it's nice knowing where they are.

Which site did you use for the red light camera POI's. If you can post it here or PM me I'd appreciate it. It sounds like that's my next project .
MI_Z06 how did you manage to get your bezel to match it looks perfect, the Metra 95-3304 I got is black, any tips welcome. And a great looking screen image.
Despite what the OP says you must put the POI.gpi file directly under the Garmin directory on the CD.
Thanks for the link. I'll be working on that later this evening!

Thanks for the compliments! I used the same 95-3304 dash kit, and it takes a good amount of sanding to get it smooth enough to apply the Krylon finish. I used a 3 step sanding process - 300, 600, then 1500 grit sandpaper to get the surface I wanted. If you're a perfectionist like I am, you'll likely find that once you think the sanding is done and apply the matte finish, you'll still be able to see areas where that need more sanding. I think it was the third time that I painted it when I was finally happy with the results. I used Krylon Matte #1311 (http://www.dickblick.com/products/kr...-matte-finish/) and it matches the rest of the dash perfectly. I would recommend taking your time on this part of the install to make sure you are happy with the finish. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
