Different head units have different quality sound?
A buddy talked about upgrading the stereo system on my C5. I mentioned I thought most of the upgrade would come from the speakers, as I assumed head units were substantially similar as far as sound quality goes.
He said that wasn't the case and the aftermarket head units can radically imporve the sound.
Is he right? If so, are there any websites that review different head units? It seems to me the quality of the sound of the head unit is the biggest factor in choosing a head unit.
The weak link in the stock C5 system is easily the speakers, with the Bose sound processor coming in second. If you get a new HU for sound quality reasons you'll be wasting your money if you don't get a new amp & speakers also. The center tub in C5's is perfect for a sub
The stock HU does put out a low level signal that can be used to supply an inexpensive aftermarket amp/sub/speaker setup that would sound much better than stock.
Maybe a 6.5" setup in the doors with a 10" sub in the trunk, all powered by a 4-channel amp. Or use a 5-channel amp if you want to keep the rear speakers.
