$500 stereo upgrade, 1990 vert
I wanted to replace my cassette only Bose with something with USB, MP3, etc. and better sound. I went with a JVC KW-XG700 CD Receiver, Infinity Reference 6020cs 6-1/2"/6-3/4" 2-way Component speakers, and Infinity Reference 5032cf 5-1/4" 2-way Speakers. $500 from crutchfield (outlet price on the two ways).
I put the two way speakers in the doors, the woofers from the component set in the rear compartment and the tweeters up in the very top corners of the windshild with double sided foam tape. The sounds is a little different with the tweeters up high, but I like it and its much better than the bose.
I like the set up, but I'd recommend an amp for a convertible if you're the kind that just won't be happy without hearing bonham's bass drum triplets at 80 with the top down.

It's 1/2 inch particle board with the woofers attached to the back using the brackets that came with the speakers so the factory bose grills will fit back over. Long wood screws worked great in place of the factory hardware and I also attached the bose grills with wood screws right into the particle board. It looks stock when its all together. I put the crossovers in the compartment behind the woofers with double sided foam tape (lots of space back there). It made for a long wire run to the tweeters, but there just isn't any place else to put them.

Real audio people are going to puke, but the two ways have double sided foam tape on the back of the magnet and are just stuck onto the steel recess behind where the bose speaker box was. I know it's a bit lame, but they're on there solid. It sounds good to me, but I'm not an audiophile. The sills go over the speakers easily. Maybe someday I'll make some enclosures, no, let's be real, I never will.

This is the side of the tuner. I'm trying to show the connector you need to pull off and plug into the new harness, but it's still hard to see. It's way up in there.

All torn apart. I used new speaker wire, about 60 feet. I also needed about 20 feet of 18 gage wire to extend the JVC harness over to the tuner. Use solder and good shrink tube. I didn't need to cut any of the original bose harnesses.
I'm pretty good with wiring and this job took me about 20 hours. It's a big job for a stereo install.
