I'm getting my factory stereo in my C5 replaced soon. I don't want to replace the Bose speakers in my doors though. The audio shop that is going to do the install has told me that they can sell me a wiring harness for $150 that will allow me to replace the head unit, and keep the bose speakers. Since the bose speakers are self amplified, I have to have this.
I've bought my new stereo from Crutchfield and they said that they have a similar harness for $10, but you lose the front two subwoofers.
Has anyone had any experience with keeping the Bose speakers and replacing the stereo? I'm not sure which I should buy, or if I'm getting jerked around. Could someone shed some light for me? Thanks!!!
Re: Factory Head unit replacement question? (chwhale)
Your stereo installation is describing a C4 Bose system. I would avoid him like the plague unless he can describe the C5 system accurately.
It is not easy to hookup the C5 Bose sub-woofer system to an aftermarket HU. I would be leery about letting the average installer even try to do it. You will be very sorry with the results.
The front and rear Bose Twiddlers are easy to use because they are standard 4 ohm speakers with no amps. Unfortunately they will sound like krap on a aftermarket HU.
Re: Factory Head unit replacement question? (99HT)
I'm about to have a Pioneer Premier DEH P640 head unit installed in my C5, but I'm keeping the factory Bose speakers. The installer, who definitely knows his stuff and has done some truly impressive C5 installs, quoted me a price of 89 bucks for the harness adaptor.
