Default Help with sound dampening choice

Hello, I've been checking out options for sound dampening. This is for a C5 Coupe. Would like to do the the doors and entire floor area of car/trunk.

I've heard that dynamat is superb and I found a package that is 36 sq feet but I'm doubting that would be enough to do the entire car.

Looking for what you guys know is good. Thanks and happy holidays. R/ Al

I had mine cabin done using SecondSkin Damplifier Pro and Overkill Pro high density foam. Certainly a better price than the Dynamat products. Very pleased with the results. Here is the web site

Thanks for the replies.... How many square feet is required to do the cabin??? I'm sure the doors are around 10 sq feet.

I'd be lying if I said my dog ate my tape measure.

I did the frost king portion of this link in my old C5. The link says 3 rolls, with each being 12"x15', so about 45 sqft by that, but that's without the doors, and I seem to remember using almost 5 rolls after doing double layers on some of the larger flat spots. Two of the 36 sqft packages you mentioned should be plenty if you go with that stuff.

It takes more than you think because of all the cutting/trimming you'll do. For my convertible, I believe I used around 125sq. ft of the Damplifier, but that included the trunk. Also layered the underside of the Tonneau and trunk lids. For the door panels, I used 2 sheets (about 18 sq. ft) of the foam pad (OverKill Pro).

You only need to cover 25% of a surface to get 95% of the damping effect. Save yourself time and money and don't be wasteful and cover the entire car.

Also, check out Raamat. They are a supporting vendor and the material is an ideal price/performance.

But before you do anything,

why don't you define your goals?

Kale, thanks... I will check out Raamat. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an aftermarket sound system. The amp will be pushing 100 watts to each front component speakers as well as 200 to the sub. I thought while doing this install I should put down some matting to prevent rattle from the speakers as well as insulating noise from the exterior of the car as I plan on installing headers and cat-back some day.

A thermal insulation is not a priority as I don't drive the Vette often in the winter here in the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks. R/ Al

if you want to insulate noise, damping mat isn't going to help a great deal. That gets complicated and expensive.

Yes, you only need to cover no more than 25-35% of the panel with the vibration damper stuffs to be effective. Anything more is a waste of money.

For noise you need to completely cover all areas with mass loaded vinyl (MLV). That stuff is heavy (1lb/sq ft)! I got my MLV here:

I'm starting to do the installation tomorrow. It's looks like a pain to install the MLV since it's so heavy and hard to form into shape.

Secondskin sells MLV with foam on it already. It's easy to work with... as far as mlv goes.

Thank you all for your assistance. I think I will give the frost king mod a go since Tim has produced good results with blocking out noise. As well I will dampen the doors to prevent rattle.

I plan on building a sub box and placing it in the center partition. What methods would you guys recommend to eliminate vibrating in that area?

Thanks again!! R/ Al
