In the setup screen Beeps are set to ON. When I press a function like "skip" for music or select a source, I do not hear a beep. I do get the beeps in the push to talk functions though.
I'm confused. Should I have beeps when selecting sources, etc? I've reset the unit as well.

Any thoughts or questions?
I'm thinking you should set when in Standby mode.....but I could be mistaken. Have you checked out the Kenwood Forum? There is a section dedicated to the 9140. I've found alot of useful information there. Perhaps you can post there for a solution.

Been living there. Tried the Standby thing but to no avail.
Is it supposed to BEEP on all button presses?
Mine does not beep on button presses (hard button or touch screen) but does beep when I press the "talk" button to engage speech recognition. I've also downloaded POI traffic camera/red light camera settings and it does give me a audible warning (beep) when I approach the GPS location.

Thanks 2KROADSTER,
Is that what the BEEPS are for maybe? I have found that while this is an awesome piece of tech, the documentation is by far the worst! Does anyone else have some thoughts to share?

Which POI traffic camera/red light camera database and/or web site do you recommend?
Thanks! I've been doing a little research since your post and the consensus is the POI-Factory is one of the better sites if not the best.
Now my question is - How does it actually work in practice? Does the 9140 "beep" interrupt the music if playing or does it just sort of overlay the warning sound?
Do you think it is effective?
I have an escort 9140 that can be loaded with a similar red light/speed camera database, but would be a pain to remove from the windshield mount and hook up to a computer every time I wanted to update the database.
Also I think the feature or being able to see the locations of the cameras on the map is a good thing.

Ghostrider26, thanks for hijacking my post Good thing I have a sense of humor.
Can anyone answer the original question: When setup for BEEPS = ON, does this mean that button presses make a beep?

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Thought we concluded that it was exactly for what we're talking about here. The system does NOT beep on button presses and frankly I think it would be annoying if it did.

Interesting response from the Kenwood forum (I hope this is OK with the Mods)
"You will not hear any beeps unless you are using the internal amp, at least that's how it is on the DDX812/DNX8120. I would imagine Kenwood's circuit design is the same on all their models though. The beep must be added in between the pre-amp stage and the internal amp, so the pre-outs don't get it. If you're using external amplification this explains your lack of beeps."

Yes, when you are approaching the GPS location, the beep does interupt the sound for about a second. You do have some flexibility to trigger either one beep of three beeps on alert. I believe this is programmable under navigation settings. Also when you download the POI csv files, you have to use an application that converts to a file structure that the Garmin unit can read. This app. is also available for free from the Poi-Factoty site. When you go through the file conversion, I believe it asks about alert distance. I set mine to trigger within 300 feet. When you enter the speed camera "zone" it also gives you a visual reading on the screen. It all works pretty good but it isn't perfect! It's only as good as the data in the file. I have found certain locations that still trigger but has no camera. Must have been removed by government municipality controling the camera. Other locations may exist, but they may not be updated on the file. You can program the gaps if you wish by identifying the locations and adding/deleting them on the original csv file and then reloading the changes back into the navigation system. Hope all this makes sense!

Makes perfect sense - Thanks for the great info and reply.
I bought a GMCO Peripheral Chime unit on eBay and lo and behold, everything works and no more wild erratic chiming for no reason. Car is like original.
