Default How much Sound Deadner Required ?

I am looking to install Fatmat (Dynamat Clone) in my C6. For those that have already done this what has been your experience of how much material is needed? 50 Sq , 100 Sq, more

I have also read that it only takes about 25% coverage to do the job. Thoughts?

Thanks for any help

1st: Don't use fatmat. Get a good deadener like Raamat.

and 25% of coverage gives you 95% of benefit.

Rick posted some basic options with prices HERE last month and started another thread HERE. I ordered some deadener and received it shortly after, I just haven't had time to install it yet.

Kale is right. There is no need to cover every surface completely.

No offense to our esteemed members here but I do have to differ a bit on most cars, 25% will do a nice job of reducing road noise to a decent degree if very carefully used but just adding mass is not the whole story. Stiffening panels is highly effective in changing the resonate frequency so the combination of mass and stiffening has always worked the best for me.

There are super dense and thick mats on the market being sold with the promise of huge benefit, the main one is really the high profit margins of the marketeers selling it

I prefer to spread the mat over a larger area to stiffen and gain the benefits of the mass and stiffer panels for more net effect.

The C5 and C6(I have not worked on earlier cars yet) are just plain loud cars and have some issues not common to other cars and thus need more in some areas and less in others. Doors and rear floor are areas are a very serious problem, doors more for good audio reproduction, rear floor just plain transmits a hge amount of noise and they need much more than 25%. I use more like 50-60% there in a basic level install, focused on the middle, if building an audio demo or competition system, especially if high powered, then even more. On my C6 I was not satisfied with the results of even a full layer of mat and foam, I added a second layer in the middle of the floor, mat and foam for a 4 layer sandwich and the results are remarkable to say the least

On doors to save some weight I like to add a couple of strips of aluminum channel to the outer door skin to stiffen it up, much less mat is needed when building a high powered system that otherwise would be required.

The balsa floors will need little if any mat, any really stiff areas not much mat is needed like most of the tunnel, I use Ensolite for heat control, not mat(but in severe cases, mat/foam/mat/foam is incredibly effective at both thermal and acoustical effect so I will do that to some of my tunnel when I finally get to that part of the car)

Before you buy a mat product be sure to do some serious research, there are some brands out there that should just not be out there at all. And, there are some marketed as super duper, above all else, cost a bundle, if you dug real deep and found out just what the real world experience behind the companies is, maybe how they consider their customers (I like to use and fully mean, my fellow enthusiasts) sometimes the hint of snake oil starts to come through

NOTE: mat is only part of the solution, not the whole story, it works in higher energy, lower frequency area mainly. I supplement it with a product for higher frequencies, helping stop panel resonance, decoupling and it is far better thermally. Using a good foam product, Ensolite is the very best by far I have ever found, will nearly double the overall effects for not a great deal of added cost, time nor weight gain

You can buy Ensolite from other companies with a made up name and pay more than I charge, I do not own it and do not make up names nor charge a huge margin on anything I do

Sincerely
Rick

thomas,
If you wish please send your exact audio plans, if you have a loud and or resonate exhaust, louder than the already stock tires, etc....and I will do my best to steer you in the right direction and at the lowest cost, even if you choose to buy elsewhere. If you want a full quote please send your zip code as well

I just did another C5 and used 100 Sq feet of the Fatmat 80mil product, not expensive. I was able to do the doors completely and most of the interior panels concentrating on the rear tub, behind the seats, the tunnel and floors. Almost all covered. Covered that with a layer of Dynapad which is a 4 layer product, open cell foam - rubber mat - open cell foam - vinyl layer. About half inch or so.

The car had a loud drive train and a powerful sound system was going in.

Outstanding result for soundproofing.
