Default C6 base audio system

look through the forum didn't find the answer, so here is the question, any one know what is the spec on the base amp? i am told the sub are 8" instead of 10" if you have the bose system. so do these 8" sub have their own amp like the bose? thanks so much.

Schematics are here.

Compare the Bose (U65) to non-Bose (U66) and you'll see that the Bose have amps internal to each door sub, and the non-Bose subs are powered by the same amp as the twiddlers.

I'm not sure why you would want to use something with a higher power handling if you're using the stock amp. Typically, higher power handling comes at the cost of efficiency. And since you're not increasing the power, you wouldn't gain anything, but you'd probably lose output.

Power handling won't prevent you from blowing out the speaker - chances are you overdrove the amp, which would cause just as much damage to a higher powerhandling speaker. It's possible you blew the woofer because you fed too much clean power to it with the stock amp, but not likely.

obviously the stock subs can't handle the stock amp since i am not the only one that has blown one of the subs. one would think since these subs are the weak link perhaps it is a good idea to get something that can handle the stock amp power when it is crank up. no?

Not really. If the stock amp were maiking clean power when you crank it up, chances are the speaker woudn't have blown. But when almost any stereo is "cranked", you can easily push the amp harder than it's designed to go, and it puts out uncontrolled, garbage power. That's what damages the speaker more often than not. You can easily blow up a 500 watt speaker by sending it distorted output from a 100 watt amp. The weak link could easily be the amplifier that's driving the speaker, not the speaker itself.

It's kind of like your Corvette. If you over rev the engine, and throw a rod, does that mean that stronger rods will let you over rev the engine? Because the rod broke, it should be obvious that it's the rod's fault, right?

But if it's obvious to you, then I'd say go for it! Personally, I don't think it's really a great idea, but everyone has their opinions. Maybe a higher wattage woofer will resolve the problem. Please let us know!

(You'll want to make sure that the replacement woofer has the same or higher efficiency, so you don't lose output and need to drive the amp harder. And make sure the replacement woofer can run properly using the airspace that the door provides, or you could lose output or power handling. - Hopefully someone can provide the woofer specs so to make speaker selection easier.)
