So, my wife came back this morning from some errands and reported that the Kenwood DNX7140 HU I installed 6 months ago suddenly went dead shortly after she drove off from a parking lot during her local trips. I checked th HU and it was totally lifeless including the blinking security light. After checking all the fuses, disconnecting the battery for a while and checking the main power fuse to the system, I suspected it may be an overheat issue (it was already 90 deg. F outside). I confirmed the overheat protection circuit behavior in the manual and waited for the car to cool down in the garage. Sure enough, the unit came back to life about 20 minutes later.
I know there are a lot of wire harnesses in the stack and the HU itself is larger and draws more than the stocker. Plus, I wrapped the bezel in leather. I would imagine that airflow is more restrictive than it was with the stock system and actually had concerns when I was installing the system last December, thinking I might need to add an auxillary fan to help keep the inside if the console stack cool in the summer heat.
I have installed numerous Kenwoods as well as other double dins and never once had an issue. Truth be told its drawing the same or less current then oem unit seeing as it isnt using an internal amp to drive the speakers.
I might wait and see if it happens again and then maybe try and reroute some harness' although I have packed tons of wire back there around radios before no issues
