I've noticed a lot of people put 6.5 speakers in the doors. My stock speakers are in the side floorboard by my feet. Do I remove those and put my 6.5's there or put the 6.5's in the door? The door has a solid vinyl area right where the speakers would seem to be, that doesn't seem like a good idea.
Most people put them in the sill area were the stock speakers are. You can remove the old
speaker and amp, and replace it w/ a 5.25" speaker very easily, a 6.5" requires more work, but is doable. Remember that to change the speakers, you will need to replace the radio, or get a interface that would boost the signal to the new speakers. A new HU will be worth it, and a amp and speakers will sound much better then the stock system.
For best results, use a component set of speakers and mount the tweeters up on the dash.
I redid the front pods to accept 6 1/4's and it made a huge difference. Originaly the pods had 4 1/2 in them. Whoever did the install just swapped the speakers in place of the original Bose ones. the whole Bose system was long gone but they left the pods as they where. I fiberglassed them solid to get rid of the original ports then hogged them out for the larger speakers. Also got rid of the back speakers as you don't need them in a vette, the subs are back there anyway. the Bose system is junk compared to any aftermarket system you can build. its worth it!
