Default K40 Radar Detector

Hey guys,

When I bought my vert earlier in the summer, it had a whole car radar detector, a K40 with forward and rear detection units. The two little red LEDs are mounted in the area by the gauges. This unit was installed in 2004. Does this even offer me any protection at this point in time? I've read some fairly negative reviews of the system and essentially stated that if I was looking for a microwave oven at Burger King, this unit would find it.

So, is the unit even worth keeping on the car? Are there any upgrades available to these radar detection systems that would make them a better system?

If you're driving down a road with a Walgreens or CVS at every intersection, then any detector is pretty much useless. Out on the interstate, where most vette drivers seem to need protection, it should be fine.

Would a system from 2004 be obsolete? I'm assuming that radar detection has changed since then.

Contact K40, maybe they have an upgrade to your existing system.... All the wires are run and it might still be useful!!! (must have been an expensive install!)

The K40's are great. That is all I have used for the last 12 years. My current C6 has the calibre but past cars used the consealed version that you have. They have made some changes to the front and rear sensors. You might be able to send them your sensors to have them upgraded for a price. They will still pick up most of the current radar frequencies though as they sit now. You might consider adding their laser diffuser. Not so much for its diffusing capabilities but more so for the ability to sense the laser hit.

K40 has GREAT support so as others have said, give them a call and see what your options are. The are a terrific company to deal with and really stand behind their products.

I just dropped them an email. Off hand, do you know where I can look to see which system is installed in the car? The gentleman I bought the car from didn't have the manuals.

Wow! K40s support is great. I dropped them an email with my concerns this morning and got an email with a direct phone number to a real live person.
They told me that the system is still very viable. They are sending me the manuals and a new **** to replace old worn out ****. I was impressed.

Great to hear! I know there is a very big V1 following around here and for good reasons but K40 is still every bit as good if your willing to spend the extra money.

For me, I like having everyhing hidden, I mean completely stealth is worth the extra cost for me. When it comes to stealth, nobody does it better than K40. Especially with a product that lasts countless years and has the best post sale support for a consumer product that I have ever experienced.

My last vette was involved in a front end collision. My calibre was just pushing 3 years of service. I got my new Z06 and when we tested the front sensors prior to the install (in my new Z06), the front sensor tested bad. I sent it to K40 and it was exchanged the same day of receipt and back in the mail. It was nearly 3 years old and their service was beyond my expectations. I would have spent a few hundred to replace the sensor and they didnt even ask for the proof of purchase. That is why my Calibre is my 4th or 5th K40 radar that I have owned in nearly 20 years. That is also why my next radar purchase will most definately also be a K40.

So I found this in the brake duct, is this a laser diffuser?

I found the k40 front detector under the bumper.

That is a laser-detection/jammer unit. It uses IR LEDs to simulate the reflection from a laser-gun's pulse. There should be one in each vent.

K40's laser jammer products are farily decent, but i wouldn't stake your life on them.
