So is pretty much everyone running an ipod these days? I don't currently have one but I think I am going to be purchasing one to put my album collection on so that I don't have to keep the physical albums in my car all the time. I think pretty much all headunits now are set up for them. What is your input on this?
i was against it for a number of years and what forced me to get one was because a number of customers i was doing stereos for wanted ipod setups in there cars so i got one so i would know what worked well etc and now i cant imagine having it any other way
I'm another convert. I started with a bunch of CD's, then got a generic hard drive based MP3 player that I wired into my HU, then eventually saw the light when I got my first iPod. They ARE as good as the hype, especially if you buy one just for the car. Once you get your playlists perfected, ain't nothin better.
If you'd like to save a few bucks, but want to avoid used units on ebay, check out the refurbished ipods direct from apple. They come with a full factory warranty and are relatively cheap. If the link doesn't work go to apple.com and search for 'refurbished'.
To use it in a car be sure to buy a dockable unit (nano's don't have the big plug on the bottom).

I first started out with a 8gb Nano, Sold that and got a 32gb touch, I am now going to sell the 32gb because I just bought a 64gb Touch, It is the only way to go, I have never been a fan of Apple, But I have to say they sure have the MP3 thing figured out.

So since I'm new to the Ipod thing,I haev another (and will probably have more) question. Once you get everything loaded on to the ipod, can you search by artist or what on the headunit to find what you're looking for?

Depending on the head unit, I have a Pioneer AVIC-X920BT DD and on it you can search by Artist, Album or songs, It will display album art, You can control it all with the head unit.

Thanks. I'll be running the DDX896 from Kenwood. I know it has a lot of controls but I'm not sure how the Ipod interface is. Wasn't expecting to go this route so it wasn't something I took into consideration. Guess I've got some research to do.

Here is what the Kenwood ipod interface looks like.

Since you're going to be controlling the IPOD with the Head Unit, I suggest you run the cable for the IPOD into the glove box and not the center console.
It's much cooler in there and the IPOD is still easy to access.
I love my iPod in the car. There's something about having 20 gig of music that makes you forget about cd's. Also you might as well do Bluetooth, that's a great addition also.
