I attempted to turn my stereo system up today and I heard what sounded like the sub (JL Audio W7) making a poping sound or distorting when I crank it up real good. so I turned it down some. When I got home I inspected the sub and I noticed that around the rubber/foam surrounding the sub its splitting? I was told that I could send the sub to JL Audio and they could recondition the sub for me? Is this true and does anyone know how much it would cost?
The amp powering my sub is a JL Audio 1000 : 1

They would basically turn it back into a brand new sub with the re-cone. You might be able to salvage the surround with some type of adhesive. Contact JL...might be worth trying before paying for a full re-cone.

if It's 350 -400 to re-cone the sub I don't mid paying that (cuz its cheaper then a new one) however, I just want to prevent this from happening again.
It would certainly need to be reconed by JL. And its not likely they would use anything other then the original materials. Can i see pictures of your setup? box design and such
I had the same thing happen to my w7. I repaired it myself, very easy. I took the sub out the box and super glued the edges around the cone where its splitting. Make sure you leave no air gaps when glueing. After you glue the edges, turn the sub upside down on a flat surface and let sit for a couple hrs. Trust me it works. When you finally reinstall the sub, dont blast it for i say a good week. Keep it at 50%. Be aware, you will still heard a little distortion after reinstalling, but it will smooth out throughout the week. Then your sub will be back to the great quality sound.

I had a custom box built for my old C5. It was built for a 12 W7, but I ended up selling the car before I installed it.
That looks exactly like it, and I had not seen any others like it. I sold it after the car was gone.
Just wondering if that is it, and if so, how did it sound?

Who knows, maybe it was my old box! Small world if it is because I am in Houston.Doy you like the sound out of the box? I can only assume you did if you worked that W7 like that.

Did you sell it to someone from Texas? Because my car is originally a Texas car. As for the Whole stereo system, it rocks. Honestly anyone who has more then one of these subs in a vette is crazy. I don't think I have ever heard a more powerful single sub system (bass wise)
On another note, my sub is going back to JL Audio for repairs.
ok after talking with the folks at auto sound lab in fresno, they said that the problem im having with my W7 is common among other W7's JL recognised this and has since fixed it on thier latest version of the W7. With that said, he also said that they will uitilize their newest stuff when they repair my sub. This is a good thing. I will admit though I almost walked out of there with the memphis "mojo" sub. the ability to fix it yourself if it goes down sold me alone.
JL=far to much $$$$$$$ that repair cost is just plain nuts.......
Guys when you want a kick but sub look at the IDMAX, IQDV3, even the ID15, the JLW7 is the only sub they make that sounds as good as these, the IDMAX which gets it on very well and cost a ton less....like half!
I like the ID15 so much I have four in my home audio install, a very high end sounding system
Sorry, venting, sorry to see people spending so much on over priced gear.

Try silicone but that is a huge crack, I have used it on much smaller ones, holes punched by screwdriver nubs, etc.........worth trying though but you might have to keep it turned down a bit.
