I have the Z120 installed in my car and love it, I also have a portable Garmin that I used in the vette before the Z120 and I can't really tell the difference, of course the interface is different but both are easy to use and have the same level of data. The only thing I don't like about the Z120 is its hard to select a position on the screen and then save it but that is the only issue I have had.

I have two Pioneer 930's (one in the Vette, one in the Truck). Prior to purchasing from Dennis at DD (great guy to deal with), I too read all of the bad press in regards to the NAV on the Pioneer. For me, I think it works fine. I also have two Garmins. Although they may not be as easy to use as the Garmins, I don't think they are as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
