I have a 900 watt Rockford amp that keep shutting off on me. I think it is getting hot, it shuts off then a couple minutes later it comes back on, then runs a little longer and shuts off again. This amp is about 8 years old and has been used in 2 differant vehicles, could it just be worn out?
I have the amp mounted behind the waterfall in my vert and grounded to the bolt under the waterfall cover. I have a #3 wire ran from the battery to a terminal block behind the drivers seat and a #8 wire ran from there to the amp for power. I did this so if i ever wanted to add a amp i would have everything i needed right there. The amp is powering a 10" sub in the back and my components in the doors, the sub is bridged.
Im also noticing the lights in the car dim a little when bass hits.
I had a 10 year old Kenwood mono amp that did the exact same thing. Before I started digging through wires I just replaced it with another amp I had sitting in the garage and that one worked fine. I took the bottom panel off the Kenwood and there was a lot of corrosion going on all over the place so I just tossed it figuring with 10 years of use I got my monies worth out of it.
Hmm...at 8 years old with this problem, I'd look at replacing the amp rather than trying to diagnose and resolve heat issues. They have gotten a lot more efficient (so that heat problem is largely mitigated) and since you've already got the car wired up, shouldn't be too much cost or hassle to replace it.
I think im gonna start looking for a new amp... Thanks for the help everyone.
So does anyone have a good suggestion for a descent amp to power a 10" sub and my components that are in the doors. The sub is a rockford and the components are ummmm i cant remember
Should i look for 2 amps and maybe just have one to power the sub and the other one to power the components and the rears? Any suggestions? I know my rear speakers are 5.25 hertz speakers.
JL makes an amazing HD900/5 amp. Little pricey through JL but you can get a good deal on some brand new ones through Ebay. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=537 There is also the JL XD700/5 depending on your budget.
