Default Replace rear speakers

Has anyone tried the stock head unit and Bose signal processor with quality aftermarket coaxial or triaxial speakers in a the rear of a C5? The stock rear speakers look really cheap and I was considering replacement. Is this worth the trouble?

Where did you get the speakers and did you do the swap yourself??? If so how easy is it to change them out?? How much $$$ would one be looking at here for this change?

THX!

What size speaker did you put in the stock mounting area? I have a pair of Infinity Kappa 6.5" triaxials laying around. I would like to try them in the rear of my Z06.

Tormania,

I bought the speakers at circuit city, cost about $120.00, I did the install myself. It's very easy.

the stock speaker covers are just held on with clips, then it's just a matter of unscrewing the old speakers and install the new ones. I also bought a harness that plugs into the stock harness so that you don't have to cut the plugs off the factory speaker harness.

rbartick,

I think the speaker size is 5 1/4" for the convertible and FRC.

Crutchfield lists 6 3/4" as the rear speaker size for the Coupe. It would surprise me if GM used different speakers in the Coupe/Convertible/Z06, but I guess anything is possible.

Thanks RPOZ4Z,

Was just checking out Crutchfield's website and they state that the factory size is 6 3/4" or 6 1/2", at least that gives the easiest fit. 5 1/4" fits they say but may require modification. Just wanted ot check on the sizes, I'm pretty sure the speakers in the car are the same regardless if it's a Convert. or a Coupe or a FRC.

BTW, do know which model # those speakers were....just doing my research! THX!

I added a large Bazooka tube sub in the rear.

It wasn't something I'd do myself though. It has a powered amp and a front mounted control in the ash tray. The install needed all kinds of wiring. The result was DEFINITELY worth it though. The sound is completely different than the stock system. IMHO the lack of bass is the biggest problem with the Bose system.. (at least after fixing the rattling Bose logos on the front speakers) ;)

Stock size is 6 1/2", I think. You can replace them with another 6 1/2" but becareful because there is not much mounting depth. If you get a speaker with a big magnet then it prob won't fit. I am running MB Quart (Model# PKC-113) 5 1/4" coax's and they barely fit. :smash: Going with the smaller speaker you have to make brackets to mount them tho. I would definately say upgrading those rear POS's is an improvement in sound. :yesnod:

crutchfield is wrong about the convertible speaker size.

I just looked at the box that my speakers came in, they are 5 1/4"!
the new speakers mounted EXACTLY like the stock speakers. the FRC has the same speaker size as the convertible.
I remember reading that the coupe does have a larger rear speaker.
