I am mostly tracking my '06C6Z06 now and considering removal of the factory radio and installing a "close-out" panel to attach my data logger. Any ideas on a source for a panel or materials that will match the adjoining panel containing the controls for the A/C? (It does not have to be a perfect match).
Also, if I remove the radio, is it necessary to terminate any electrical connections or install a speaker for the notification system?
if you remove radio you will loose chimes and onstar unless you add some modules
Install one of the modules for use when you are replacing the factory head unit with an aftermarket. They have small speakers that will give you the chimes and then you can remove the factory speakers for the weight savings. There is also an amp (Bose or Delco depending on system, maybe Z06 is only Bose, but doesnt matter) in the passenger footwell that you can remove as well.
For the panel if you get some ABS, fit the panel, sand it smooth and bead blast it you will get a "close enough" look. This is what a number of folks have done to get the Metra and other mfg dash kits to match when installing aftermarket radios. You could even get one of those kits, use the pocket that they often come with if you're installing a single DIN and you'd have a smaller gap to fill.

That's what I was thinking. Get an adapter like this to fit your data logger in.
Re the radio removal, if you plug in a C2R-GM24 adapter you will retain all of the chimes and the car will be happy since it also simulates a radio being there.
As mentioned, to save even more weight you can also remove the amp from passenger footwell and the speakers from the doors/hatch.

I don't know how far you're trying to go here and I realize you're in TX, but...to save more weight yet, think about pulling the HVAC system completely, then you could just do a single ABS plastic piece over the center stack and affix all your race gadgets, switches, etc. there.

l will probably remove the factory center speaker and mount my GPS antenna in the same location. Good idea on the amp, I will look for it. Is it by the fuse panel under the carpet?

What is a good source for the C2R-GM24 adapter? The data logger has a 3.5" LCD screen and snaps in the square mountshown below I don't think it will fit in the rectangular slot for the DIN and the cables run out of the right side. That is why I am considering a flat panel and mounting to the surface.

I am considering ditching the a/c as well. Weight savings is significant and in the front of the car. Although I have a trailer I do occasionally drive it to and from the track when near. But, it is only June here and been in excess of 100* with 65% humidity for the last five weeks! I also use the a/c when sitting at the grid when running in the heat.
Dennis also sells the interface adapters. You can find them for a few bucks less with any search engine, but if something goes wrong his service can't be matched.
