Do any of you guys know how easy these are to install/ how they know when you put your car in reverse? I was looking at them on ebay, they're going for 20 bucks Might go well with my limo tint so I can actually see when I'm backing up!
The el-cheapo units on flea-bay are typically made-in-China specials that are not worth the time it takes to install them because of poor reliability and picture quality. The get-what-you-pay-for rule applies. Bust out a Franklin or more for a quality name-brand camera, like Sony or Kenwood for example. I installed a $200 Kenwood backup cam on a van and the results were excellent. The view angle is wide enough to see 3 lanes wide. A year and a half later, it's still working perfectly. This is the model currently in my shopping cart for my Vette:
About the only practical way to install these on our cars is the via the rear license plate. I'm going to make a custom adapter that bolts on behind the plate and suspends the camera slightly above. Boyo and others make cams that directly bolt on the outside of the plate- very easy.
I will have to disagree- I bought one of the cheapo E(vil)-Bay units on a whim, and it works great for what it is. I may add one to the Vette- I put mine in my 2010 Ram 3500 crew cab so I could see the gooseneck hitch when hooking up. The unit I got is wireless so I can also move it to the back of the horse trailer for backing into spots at shows. I do get a lot of interference at that distance (none when on the truck itself, the trailer is 32' long!), but still clear enough so I can see if I am going to hit anything.
The wireless camera I got was $40 on E-bay and it includes a 3.5" screen and connects the two wirelessly. Pretty slick- they sell just about the same setup for $99 at Sam's club (saw it last night). Only had mine 6 months but no problems so far. Mine is not wired into the truck though- I set mine up to run off of a 12v battery from an old UPS computer backup...
The camera taps into the reverse lights to automatically switch an aftermarket radio over to the rear view camera (if the radio can do it, oem setup can't). Install is pretty simple, all you need is power, ground, and reverse light tap.
