Default Vehicle DVR

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to have an iPhone recording video on my dash when someone came into my lane and put a scratch down the driver's side of the car.
The driver of the other vehicle gave a much different description of the accident and without any usable witnesses it was pretty much his word against mine.

Except I had a video.

With a little effort and some phone calls I was able to get his insurance company to cover all damages and my rental.

I said then that a vehicle DVR would be worth the cost if only one incident ever occurred. I live in a "no fault" state, so frequently officers will not bother with the "he said she said" and let each insurance company take care of their insured.

It's been two years and I still haven't bought a DVR however.

I'm looking for something with GPS, 4 channel, solid state, and an alarm trigger (video the bad guy that's messing with the car in the parking lot).

It looks to me like this one would do the job.

However, it's difficult to know anything about the usability and reliability with technology that isn't terribly popular with us civilians.

Anyone have any experience / suggestions?

I don't know anything about that, but depending on how much you drive and what you want to do with it. A gopro camera might be a good idea. It's says it'll record 720p (30 fps) for 8 hrs. 9 minutes with a 32 gig SD card.

Not sure if that's what you'd want, but just wanted to toss out an idea.

Default Blackvue

GoPro and Contour both make great mobile cameras (I prefer Contour) but they don't do everything I want.

The above is pretty good but hadn't noticed that it is not HD... it's not even 720p, so that's definitely out.

Blackvue DR500GW offers almost everything I'd want except for multiple angles.
1) 1080p
2) Park mode
3) GPS
4) G-Meter
5) Event recording
6) Recycling recording
7) Wi-Fi (not necessary but nice)

I may just buy 2 of these to satisfy my front and rear requirement. I'd really hoped for a 4 channel though.

I started looking into this as well the other day.. .
The BlackVue is a finalist for me.

Please keep the thread updated with your overall experience - installation, operation etc. .

thanks,

The install shop is going to put together some options for me. If I don't like them i'll be going with two of these black vue cameras. I would prefer to have a camera also recording interactions with police or others, but it will be sufficient.

I'm fairly certain we'll see some big advancements in these types of systems in the coming years with the volume of sales they are receiving.

You could also go with something like this.

It can be setup to record automatically during rapid decelleration incidents. It has the option for a second video camera as well, and can record both cameras at the same time. For $220, it's not a bad idea if you're looking to get video. I didn't see a GPS option, but I don't know how important that is to you.

That's nice. It's 720p but that's acceptable.

The big downside for me is that I have a nice rearview mirror and would lose compass/temp/map lights/auto dimming.
