Default Aux mods

So, yesterday I attempted to do the aux mod. I got my XM unit out went and bought the Male -> Female Aux cable from radioshack and began with cutting off the female end as instructed and come to find out....there are only two wires ( Red and Black ) but under the instructions it lists that it should have 3, so my question is where do I find the approiate cable?????

Is it a mono or stereo cable ?

If stereo, is there a metal braided shield wrapped around both red/black wires ?

If yes, that's the common -.

And yes the wires were shielded.

You need the stereo cable.

The shield is common, experiment with black & red wires to see which is left/right.

Normally with headphone type plugs the tip is LH, center is RH, and base is common, but that won't help you

Shield (brown?) is the common wire, red is prob right, black is prob left. Make sure they're connected to the three wires the instructions show. If they're correct, try adjusting output volume on ipod/whatever to see if it helps.

If whine won't stop you'll prob have to find an isolation filter of some type to put in the line.

My aux cable only had two wires not 3 as listed. And what does the brown connect to? Wiring is not my strong suit.

I am looking at the brown wire on the xm unit, does that need to be wired onto something.

Do you know how to post pics? If yes, please post a clear pic of the cut/stripped end of your cable.

If not, please explain the wire colors again, and if there is/isn't a metal braided shield between the outer insulation and the two inner wires.

AUX - Red - Green/White (Right Audio) --- How I have them connected now
AUX - Black - Brown/White (Left Audio) -----^

On the Aux cable there are two wires, red and black. The cable has a metal braided shield that insulates the two aux wires.

Its thunderstorming outside and am unable to get pics atm.

No pics needed. Connect the metal braided shield to Tan/White just like it was a third wire, the whine will probably go away and you may gain some volume also.

When i cut the tan white some of the whine came out but connecting it to the shielding doesn't seem to help at all, its more obvious now with higher volume.

You can try to splice in a pair of GLI's to get rid of the whine, or get the appropriate aftermarket adapter.

I'm actually surprised you had any sound at all without the common connected, but don't know why you have whine when it is connected.
