im about to rip the complete bose stereo (wires and all) out of my c4 and replace it. from what ive *heard* it is better too make some custom boxes for the speakers. i am no pro at car audio, but i am not to pickey and need to save money so if i do a decent job i will be happy. heres my Q, what materail do i use, and what deminsoins do the boxes going to be? im probaly going to fit some 6.5 all around, or what ever will fit. they will be powered by my cd player. and my second Q is, i have a 12" cerwin vega, i will be powering it with a 750 watt amp. i would like to make a cutom box that wil slide to the very back of the trunk, and be about level with where the rear glass hatch. what diminsions would i need for that? should it be ported? any advice will help!
thanks,
matt smith

Front bose boxes can be converted to hold 5 1/4" speakers. Rear can have 6x9 or 6 1/2" if you are using a sub. Sub box should be made from fiberglass or MDF. I used MDF as I find woodworking easier than the fumey fiberglass jobs.

Do you think we should use MDF? i finally blew my cerwin vega (it is about 3 years old, and always on). but i havd the 4 year warrenty at bestbuy. so now i have 120$ in store credit. looking for a new sub, but i think im going to get this one so it will fit in the vettes compartment: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...9,2016,00.html
if you need 120$ worth of stuff at best buy i can make a little exchange with you, ill buy it on store credit you can give me cash. if not ill just wait untill i save up some more money. does anyone know about these subs? are they really good? it says it needs .6 cubic feet, so i figure it fill fit reall good in the back of the vette.

I just reread your post and noticed this. It would not be a good idea to run all of your speakers off the HU, unless you don’t mind not getting any sound from them.
What make and model of amp is it you are planning to run your subs off of? All you said was it was 750 watts. Of course you will most likely not see that power depending on the amp of course.
First off I’m not a big fan of Pioneer. Second, are you planning on using just one sub? If so, I wouldn’t recommend using a single Pioneer DVC 10” unless you have one hell of a good install with plenty of power, precise enclosure dimensions and perfect crossover points and wiring specs. With a single sub design a 12” (properly powered) would be much more forgiving of errors. Also, you would be better off airspace wise building a sealed sub enclosure to fit in the rear hatch area instead of trying to fit it in one of the storage compartments. You have limited airspace in the storage area especially after building a ¾” MDF enclosure for it and anything fitting that criteria would give very little bass response. For a single DVC 10” design you would need to go with a much higher quality sub like the Fosgate HX2 or HE2 but they would require more airspace than a storage compartment can offer, a lot more power and a hell of a lot more money.
i was running the speakers off of the head unit in my previos car and it sounded fine. it got to a level which it was ear drumming loud.. the amp is a sony explode 760 watt amp. the sub i had in mind has a recommended enclosure of .6 cf, and the compartment is 1 cubic foot..it funny you mention the fosgate he2. i just got back from best buy, and had a little convo with one of there car audio guys. he told my that it is an overpriced peice of crap. he said that he had that powered by a fosgate amp (600watts i think he said) and it was really bad. all the people in the car audio section recomended the poineer 12'. the differnce in price was like 50$ more for the fosgate. so it seems like im getting mixed opinions!!!i wanted to make my car have a good sounding sub, but it is such a small car i do not beilve i will need a high powerd amp sub combo to do this. i plan on building the box this sunday. i was leaning towards a box for the trunk, until i saw this way and figured it would be less obtrusive in a daily driver.
thanks for the advice!
any other suggestions?
can a 12" fit in the storage compartment, or is that pushing it?

Matt,
We will definately use MDF as it is an easy medium to work with, affordable and easily procured from any Home Depot etc.
Nice score on the store credit; I'll look into the specs of that sub and see if it will fit our app well. With a sealed airspace requirement of only .6 it should be a nice fit as long as the rms wattage, signal distortion ratio and frequency response look good. I'll give you a call tomorrow so we can get everything lined up for Sunday. My initial thoughts are to plan on using the 10" subs I have and see if we are pleased with the result. From there we can tune and adjust. If all goes well we can throw into cad and post it if anyone else is thinking of doing something similar.
cool.. my buddy just used the store credit. turned out it was 130$. that worked out good. used and abused a sub for 3 years and got a full rebate. so, now i need to find a new sub!!! i went and talked to a dif buddy of mine, he said he can get me about half off the fosgate he2, so it would be 100$ instread of 200$. should i do it? what do you guys think? 10 or 12"? compartment or box in trunk? all these Q's!!!!!
man.. Ken, Chris, and i started out early sunday to build 3 sub boxes for the compartment. well.. we finished one "custom italian hand made box" (inside joke). and 1 actual box. i have a q's though. is the 3/4 mdf reallty that important? it was a pain to deal with and took up our valuable air space. also, i was wondering if anyone has pics of the box they made for there compartment. we tried several different ways and where only able to get MABEY .5 of a cubic foot.
on another note- it was good to meet you ken, see you this weekend to finish the boxes. let me know how your box/kicker sounds, and if you want to come by and grab that amp. i found out there is a place on i35 called tweeters, that is sopose to be a good store for car audio, we should stop by there.
