Metra sells a wiring harness adapter for just that makes install easy. I used it with a sony head unit on my 1990. You may have to add resisters if you get the SYS.

So, in my '89 I could repair my stock speakers and then change the head unit...would I need an inline amp? I guess not because the speaker amps would take care of this. And the radio antenna would work? I read somewhere about modifying the wire harness to permit the antenna to work with an after market head unit.

With the metra harness the signal to the speakers come from the RCA jacks witch are not amplified, the harness has the wires for the power antenna. I dont now if they make an adapter for your 89 since they are difrent. I got my radio and adapters from cruchfeild, they were very helpfull. as far as i now the power to the amps come from the same relay that powers the antenna, so when you turn on your radio the amps are turned on and the antenna raised at the same time.
when you use this harness can you leave everything in place and just plug in the harness?
Except for the radio head unit you can just plug everything in except the wires coming from your new head unit, those have to be connected using crimps or soldering.
