I ran across this thread where someone put a nexus 7 into his e46. Ive done some searching on those forums and found that the BMW guys have the luck of an OEM amp in the car, so this is almost a plug and play installation with all the parts he bought...you only need to splice the rca out cables from the digital audio converter into a radio harness. To do this on a c5, youd have to add an amp OR add a single din radio somewhere hidden, then run the nexus 7 line out to the radio. Anyone done anything similiar to this? Its very interesting to me. Im sure you can set up the tablet to 'wake on power' and install FM radio apps and GPS. Youd need to tether it to your phone if you were running google nav, but thats not that big a deal. Or you can actually buy a GPS program if youre worried about data and sync it every once in awhile to your home wifi to keep it updated. Considering the bezel is a cost whether you go double din aftermarket radio or not, and the nexus 7 is very cheap compared to double din nav units...I think this is a great idea! Maybe someone can chime in with more knowledge then I have!

Why not do this instead, if you can tap the port for reading diagnostics information you could have a data recorder full time as well and self diangostics when the car is running..

What I did on my Lincoln LS for the power was hook it to a constant power source but with a switch.
When the interior got hot in the summer in a parking lot my Galaxy tablet would say charging stopped because it was too hot or too cold and the message would not go away unless I turned the power off.
Generally I leave the tablet booted up but just press the button to turn off the display when I leave the car then when I come back I push the button again and it comes back on instantly.
I've been working on this for a little while, still in the planning stages. As for power, the plan I had is to use a USB OTG cable+charger and an A/C converter switched via relay from the ignition (or the passenger floorboard, can't recall the exact wire off the top of my head).
I want the tablet to be mounted and integrated into the dash, not on it. I've got a spare bezel to play with and am currently trying to work out a way to access the power switch w/o having to remove the tablet. That overheating/too cold message does worry me, and I'm sure it'll annoy me on summer days. Hopefully between insulation (and a cover or shades) I can keep it cool enough in there to avoid that.
Planned setup is:
Nexus 7
Audison bit one (via USB audio)
ZED Draconia-III
ZED Minotaur-II
SEAS Excel W18NX (Doors)
ScanSpeak D3004/6020 (A-Pillars)
JL 12W6V4

I added a micro toggle switch in the console of my LS which you could do if you get the too hot/cold message.
Since the tablet has a battery it will work when it's not charging.
You may have to provide an indent in the bezel to get at the screen on/off button
That looks interesting.
Maybe in the future I'll consider it.
None of the models say din 1/2 size though.
I put the Galaxy tablet into my LS 2 1/2 years ago and I like the idea of using my Note 2 cell phone as a head unit like a removable faceplate especially since it fits the 1 1/2 din space in the C5 perfectly without reworking the bezel.

Also, a slight mod to the bootloader would seems to provide the auto-on capability when USB power is connected - option for not having to provide power button access. Tasker app should add the option to pause/close apps and deep sleep upon removal of power.
