I've got a couple of road trips coming up over the next few months and am looking for something to counteract the new radar/laser that the passports and V1s don't pick up. I'm looking for one of those handheld CBs that plug into a cigarette lighter, so that I can hopefully hear about any traps coming my way.
Re: any recommendations on portable CBs? (tbrewing)
We tried this in the GS Vert with little success. The top bars do a pretty good job of soaking up most of the radio waves both in and out. Very short range both ways. I have bought but not yet installed a Cobra Mike type unit and no ground plane antenna for our next trip.
Re: any recommendations on portable CBs? (tbrewing)
Many people use the Cobra remote mount CB. This radio is basically just a microphone with all radio controls on the handpiece. The output finals are in a small box which can be tucked away under the dash or in the center console.
I had been using a cellular look glass mount antenna. The reception/ transmission sucked. I just finished installing the no ground plane antenna from Eckler's. This antenna kit mounts behind the rear license plate. After, I dialed in the SWR (standing wave ratio) of this antenna, I was really pleased with the transmit and receiving range. This kit was about $150, but it works well.

Somebody let me know if you figure out how to get good Smokey info on ch 19 without having to listen to a bunch of loudmouthed morons for hours on end. I couldnt take the drivel, finally went back to just the Valentine and listened to CDs.
