Typically it's a mounting plate, which seperates the front speaker wavepath from the rear speaker wavepath. Think of a box with 5 sides, the baffle and speaker would make the sixth side and complete the enclosure, seperating the air moved by the front of the speaker cone from the air moved by te rear of the speaker cone. :cheers:
