Ok, so I spent the last 2 weekends putting a 21" subwoofer in the back of my 2007 C6. Learned a lot through the forums and had the typical ground loop problems, but it turned out exactly as I had hoped. Just wondering if anyone else has put a super large subwoofer in their car and what their box looked like. I'll attach a pic of mine.
Are the windows still intact or do you only run it with them down and/or the top off?
LOL! They are still intact as of this moment. Luckily I have the transparent top and it allows for some flex. This woofer is a pro audio type and so doesn't have a huge excursion. The bass is pretty tight but still gives me great thumping
It blends really well. I originally had set the gain up high, but of course all I had was a huge amount of bass where I couldn't even hear the fronts. It is set up on the rear channel output of the stock radio, so I turned the gain of the amp down so that it sounded good at the mid point of front-to-back with the bass level at the mid point. Now it is perfect, and I can turn the bass level up on the radio by fading to the rear or turning the bass level up...
Overkill, maybe, but fun! My son has a Mazda 6 with a box and a couple of 12" kickers that cost a boatload and I told him we used to just build our own boxes and use home woofers (none of the fancy stuff I set out to build a box that sounds good and has a "wow" factor. It won't win any competitions, but he was impressed
I used one of the inexpensive Boss NXD4500 amps which put out about 2100 watts rms at 4 ohms. I'm running an 8 ohm speaker, so I'll probably get less than a 1000 watts out of it, and maybe only a few hundred clean watts.
As for amperage, this amp is fused at 140 amps and I haven't blown the fuses yet. I installed a new 145 amp alternator just to be cautious.
Oh, and check out the view from outside the vette when it is dark. I've got the LEDs tied into the tail lights..
