I've decided on a Pioneer X5700HD head unit and a Pioneer 4 channel power amp which will be running four speakers in my 89 coupe.
In case I need more bass I can install a powered sub roofer. The head unit only has four pre-amp outputs which will be connected to the power amp to run the 4 speakers.
Where or to what does a powered sub connect ? The rear channels on the power amp are bridgeable but can I use the rear speakers AND the powered sub on the rear channels? Or is there some other way to hook all this up?
Some amps have a switch that lets you use just the 2 front inputs for all 4 channels. If yours has that you can use amp gains to set a constant front/rear fade and use second set of RCA's for the sub.
If your amp needs 4 input RCA's you can get a set of Y-splitters for the amp and still use second set for the sub.
I would split the front signal to the 4 channels and use the rear as a dedicated sub output. That way you can properly set the HP and LP filters on the HU for what each RCA is supplying and have control of the sub from the HU. You'll lose front/rear fade control, but that can be permanently set with the amp gains.
It wouldn't matter between self powered or a normal amp/sub combo, they both need an input signal. Just make sure you buy a sub that can use RCA line-level inputs and isn't limited to a speaker level source.
Well, after a long conversation with the tech folks at Crutchfield I went a different route.
It seems most all Pioneer head units only have 2 pair of pre out jacks while most Kenwoods have 3 pair.
Going with the Kenwood X799 head unit, problem solved. Also ditching the power amp/ sub woofer until I see how the head unit alone sounds, it may be enough with 22w X 4 ch.
I can't say enough good about the tech at Crutchfield, very patient with me and really helped me understand the set up. With a discount on the speakers I came out with a good system at a price I couldn't have gotten from feebay.

What!????
Every Pioneer head unit I have purchased since 2001 has 3 seperate RCA outputs. Front, rear, and sub.
Well Mike, I found that out by researching the units, Crutchfield only told me how to hook up everything. Here's a pic of the rear of the Pioneer unit I was contemplating, X5700HD. Every one I looked at under $200 only had 2 pair, also what the spec sheets note.
I've already ordered the Kenwood but if you know of a Pioneer unit w/HD radio, CD player and variable illumination colors please LMK. I thought I looked at them all.

Check out the Pioneer Deh-80prs, you can even cross everything over from it. It has every preout you need. You should call Dennis at DoubleD Mods, he will set you on the right path and have the best deals!
Of all the ones mentioned above only the 8700BH has HD radio and all the other features I want. It does look like a good unit, don't know how I missed it.
I stand corrected, there are Pioneer units with 3 outputs.
You want your car done right the first time, let the expert Dennis get you going with your purchase, not only when you buy from him, you can call him about any installations questions, has you can see from others he's the one you want.
