Default Unknown switch

I recently purchased a 1999 C5 basic and have been working on all the little bugs.

I have a switch below the trunk release and have no idea as to what it does. I suspect it may be an aftermarket alarm system but am too lazy to chase down the wires. (looks like trouble to get to)

I was just wondering if anyone has seen this switch before. I can not find it in the owner's manual.

Thats definitely not factory and the application could be just about anything. That style of switch is very generic, so I doubt anyone would be able to tell just from appearance. A deeper dive is going to end up being necessary.

Could be anything

It's not hard to pull out the plastic piece that is directly above your feet when driving, that may give you a peek at the wires.

Is there anything obviously aftermarket on the car that it may control? Possibly lights underneath?

Have you tried flipping the switch to see if it does anything?

The red light on the switch comes on. I am going to have to dig into the wires.

If it were factory it would be connected to the harness, which I suspect is not the case.

It has to still be connected or the red light wouldn't be coming on.

Pull down the plastic cover with the footwell light mounted on it and follow the wires

Found it. Someone along the line installed red led lights. They are in the front brake scoops, door handle cavities and along the bottom rear.

They didn't show up well in the daylight, when I was chasing it. They look really good at night but I think they are illegal if I am moving.

Someone went to a lot of trouble to install those in so many locations. I personally think the ones over the exhaust look cheap and gaudy. The ones on the door handles would only be nice if they only came on when the car was unlocked by remote, so that the door handle becomes more visible at night. The ones in the fender openings aren't bad at all. Since you can't physically see the LEDs, only their light.

Legality is another question. But it's a good thing they installed that switch. Did they at least wire it, so that they shut off when you switch off the key?
