Default Alpine 7998

I need a little help setting up this HU. My system consists of

Alpine 7998
McIntosh 6ch Mc4000m amp
Focal Utopias 180w no rear fill
JL Stealthbox

For those who have this HU and have set it up I have a couple of questions.

1) The little switch on the side of the HU for 2way or 3 way in my situation, it is a 3 way, right? I notice that in the book they refer to a 2 way as front rear sub. So I assume I need to set it to 3way.

2) If you have passive x-overs with your separates what good does the x-cross over settings do on the HU? How do you start to get these setting right?

3)Do you start with adjusting gain with a flat response and then tweak the settings? Or do you get the sound right and then adjust the gain?

4)Does anyone that used the I-Personalize site have a file set up and could send it to me? I just want to see how the x-over is set so I can at least get an idea. I believe on the alpine site before you dl the file you can print the settings out in a list format. This would be extremely helpful.

I am just starting out and coming from a simple bass treble mentality this is really confusing.

You help is greatly appreciated.

I will send you my file. It is an MP3 of course. If I was at home I could print it and scan it for you and then email it. Let me know if you can not burn the cd or if there is a problem uploading it into the HU.

I have components in the doors, braxials in the rear and a sub but I left my setting set to 2-way.

I have passive crossovers in each of the doors. I left them set to the null position and control all from the HU.

I have a test CD from Scheffield labs (sp) and I put that in with all of the interconnects removed from the inputs at the amps. I then turned the HU up to about 31. That is a about 94% I think. I then skip through the disc to a signal db that I want and then start with the interconnects for channel a and b for front and rear and then the sub. Using a mid range hz for the rears and 10 - 50hz for the sub. I use about 2k or higher for the fronts. I then adjust the gain with one interconnect inserted at the set freq. I adjust accordingly as it goes through the various freqs in 30 second intervals. I have a multimeter that has a rudimentary o-scope in it and can set it for the peaks and valleys or the clip settings can even make the little donuts with a freq counter. :D It is also easy to do by ear, especially once you are isolating each channel.

I contacted CDT Audio for the amp settings prior to doing my gain settings. Once they replied I set the amps to their recommendations and then started the clip settings. On the HU I put the EQ to my normal listening positions. All five of the bands. On the mp3 file I have them set a little high. I went in and did the corrections for bass focusing and imaging.

I made the measurements from a spot in the center of the dash below the rearview mirror to each speaker.

Let me know if you have a problem and I will try to help you if I can.

Thanks for taking the time to share the MP3. I received it and promptly went and burn a disk only to have my burner decide to die  Ever think somebody is telling you something :D

Anyhow if you get the chance can you send me the text file so I can manually upload the info.

Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it!

Damn that is some nice stuff. The only suggestion I would possibly make is that you could get someone to build you a real nice custom sub box so you can put a real sub in there instead of the weak one the Stealthbox comes with.

Thanks,

I agree the sub is the weak link but I am not a bass head. I want to tweak the settings and see if I am happy with the performance. I will then make the decision weather to upgrade the sub.

You should see the red vinyl amp rack that matches my mod red interior. Now this is going to blow your mind. It even has a beauty cover to hide the amp with a raised Z06 logo I put under the vinyl. it came out amazing. Looks factory!

Pics will eventually be posted when I get some time
