Default C5 Stereo components questions...

Well, I'm taking the next step in putting my new Stereo system together. What I presently have sitting in the closet waiting for install is:

Alpine 7998 head unit.
MB Quartz QM 218.61 Q speakers (for front and rear).
Rockford Fosgate H800A4 (4-channel) Amp for the MB Quartz Q's
Rockford Fosgate H1000A2 (2-channel) Amp for the Sub.

I have a JL 12W7 Sub on order and a custom rear box being made.

I'm thinking of running Stinger 12 Gauge OFC Blue/Silver speaker wire on the MB Quartz Q's and a 8 Gauge OFC Blue/Silver on the Sub.

Question is: Will these gauge wires suffice?

I am also thinking about buying a Stinger 1 Farad Digital Super Cap Fused for the Sub. Good idea or waste of money???

Last question: Would going with a pair of ZAPCO amps be better for my electrical system AND give me a better quality amp???

Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

That wire gauge is just right! You really can't go wrong with a good large quality conductor. DO NOT, I repeat , DO NOT, fuse the cap more than once, or at least less than 120% of what the sub amp is fused at. The instantaneous charging/discharging of the cap is murder on fuses. So the over rating of the fuse is kinda a principle I've always followed. The cap can be fine fused only with the main supply fuse, but it's your call.

That should sound good when installed.

That will be just fine. Also, use no smaller than 4-guage (I would recommend 2-guage especially if you plan on future upgrades) for main power and ground wires and use the same gauge wire to upgrade (add to) the electrical system wires under the hood.

I am also thinking about buying a Stinger 1 Farad Digital Super Cap Fused for the Sub. Good idea or waste of money???
To cap or not to cap, that is the question… :D

With the amount of power you have you will definitely need to upgrade the "Big 3" wires under the hood. Now keeping in mind that Stiffening caps are an added load to your alt, and that C5 alt's are 110 amp and the stock electronics alone take up much of that. Anything over 1000 watts in a C5 is pushing it for the stock alt and those RF amps are powerful amps.

However, having said that, I would put that cap in there anyway for this reason. Even if you find you will need to upgrade the alt you will already have the Big 3 taken care of (right?) and you can use the cap to filter the power (smooth out the voltage) to the amp(s).

As for fusing, JoeyG is right, don't fuse more than once inline between the cap and whatever amp you run it to, but running through a fused distro block is fine if you want the cap to cover more than one amp, in your case, two amps. That way it will still be fused only once inline to each amp. In case you're asking yourself, yes, it is ok to run the cap on both your components and sub(s).

Last question: Would going with a pair of ZAPCO amps be better for my electrical system AND give me a better quality amp???
They won't necessarily be any better for your electrical system but yes, the SQ would be better. However, considering that you don't really need SQ on a sub that will be playing mono anyway (you want as much power to that JL 12W7 as you can get) and the fact that you might want to hear how the system sounds with that component/amp setup anyway (you already have it) just stick with what you have. The RF amp's SQ won't be that much less than the ZAPCO and if you feel that you want more after hearing it, upgrade then. I guess what I'm trying to say to you is, stick with what you have until you listen to the finished install before you go spending more money on replacing existing components. :D

Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Great!

Sounds like I'm going to need to do the "Big 3" as you mentioned in detail in another post.

I've got an underdrive pulley system on the Z06 right now so it looks like I'm going to have to upgrade to a high amp alt to make this systems work right.

Thanks again!

Always a good idea.

A 175amp alt should do nicely. Check out this website, they have good prices on them:

Silly question... by upgrading to a bigger alternator, will you lose hp? If so, how much (approx)?
